SUMMARY:2026 Ditch Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Ditch Creek  \nProject Dates:   June 7-13  \nDeep in the beautiful Selway Bitterroot Wilderness\, we'll work up the Ditch Creek Trail to the Moose Ridge Trail\, one of the most remote sections of the Idaho Centennial Trail. We'll fly from McCall into Shearer\, a backcountry airstrip along the Selway River. The trail may be clear from earlier season's efforts\, but the crew may need to camp at Shearer and work up Ditch Creek for a day to ensure the trail is passable to stock.  Once clear\, 51 Ranch Outfitters will provide pack support to move gear up to a base camp along Ditch Creek.  The crew will work up Shearer Ridge and Ditch Creek\, cutting out logs and clearing trails\, possibly moving camp once during the week depending on the number of down trees we find\, and then backpacking out to catch a flight home.   \nITA\, the Forest Service\, and Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation have all put time into re-opening and maintaining this section of trail over the past several years\, and on this project we will re-clear and build on the work completed last year. This project will also ensure that pack support from 51 Ranch will be available to the next ITA crew the following week\, who will be packed further up to work on the Moose Ridge Trail\, which is part of the ICT. Between the two projects\, ITA will make a big impact on trails in this incredible area!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Ditch Creek Trail #523\, Shearer Ridge #547  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Fly out of McCall early Sunday morning. Possible to camp at Shearer for a day\, then work with the outfitter/packer to move camp up the trail 5 miles. Friday\, hike back to Shearer to prepare for a Saturday morning flight back to McCall.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support \nCrew Leader: Ray Arguello    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear.  This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – 5 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain to the first camp; trail follows along the creek. But after the first camp location\, Shearer Ridge hosts a mile of switchbacks to climb up to the ridge.  See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Lots of saw work\, brushing\, and some tread work. The trail was cleared last year\, and we'll re-clear and push forward!   \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! SUMMARY:2026 Selway River South
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Selway River South  \nProject Dates: June 10-14  \nCome enjoy a backcountry adventure along the headwaters of the Selway River! Starting at the Historic Magruder Ranger Station\, we'll backpack south from here\, cutting out logs as we go in a "cut and run" style project. This means more emphasis on log out and opening the trail as far as possible vs focusing on brushing and tread work. This trail is an important access point to the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, popular with day hikers and backpackers exploring the Magruder Corridor and an important connecting trail for hunters and outfitters.  \nOn the first night\, we will backpack to Upper Crossing (about 5 miles in) and as work allows bump camp further during the week. There are some great backcountry campsites all along the headwaters of the Wild and Scenic Selway River\, with a chance to cover up to 12 miles. The goal is to cover as much trail as possible during this project.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Selway River Trail #4   \nItinerary: This is a five-day project. Meeting at the trailhead on the morning of June 10th\, ready to backpack. Bumping camp each night as work allows. On the 14th\, packing up and hiking back to the trailhead to head home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Alex Cravener  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 45 min from Darby\, Montana  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – The Selway River gains 2\,500 feet of elevation over 8 miles; but with a gentle slope and following the creek the whole time. Carrying all personal gear and tool in backpacks with no pack support. Downhill on the hike out on the last day! See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – All crosscut and saw work to remove logs from the trail. SUMMARY:2026 Trapper Creek - Youth
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Trapper Creek – Youth \nDates: June 11 – June 14 \nITA’s Youth Trail Crew Program provides opportunities for youth ages 14-18 to learn about the outdoors while building and maintaining hiking trails in a safe\, teamwork-oriented environment. \nThis four-day project will be ITA’s only boat-in youth project in north Idaho. Participants will travel by boat to Trapper Creek Campsite on the northeast end of Upper Priest Lake and camp right along the shoreline. The campsite offers beautiful lake views\, a sandy beach\, and opportunities for swimming and fishing after workdays. From camp\, the crew will work on a three-mile section of trail heading north toward the road on a route that has not been maintained in some time and will likely require extensive brushing. \nThe Trapper Creek Trail is an important connector that completes a full loop around Upper Priest Lake by linking to the Navigation Trail. It is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail (ICT)\, a nearly 1\,000-mile route spanning the state that ITA helps maintain. Throughout the weekend\, youth will focus on brushing\, cutting logs\, and general trail clearing while learning safe tool use\, teamwork\, and trail work fundamentals. Crew members will also share responsibility for camp life and practice Leave No Trace principles while enjoying a remote\, wilderness-style camping experience. \nITA’s youth projects are completely free for volunteers to join\, and all food is provided. Gear can be borrowed from ITA if needed with advance notice\, or youth may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund. \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions. \nTrails: Upper Priest Lake Trail #302 \nItinerary: This is a four-day project. Volunteers and a parent/guardian will join a pre-trip Zoom meeting before the project. Meet Thursday afternoon at the Lionhead Campground in Priest Lake State Park to boat into the project site. Friday and Saturday will be full workdays. Sunday\, break down camp\, boat out\, and be ready for pick up at Lionhead Campground in the early afternoon. \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes – Cook \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects \nCrew Leaders: Taylor Mailly and Miles Butler \nEstimated Hike Time from Trailhead to Camp: Short boat ride\, camping on Priest Lake \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile \nYouth Trip Selection: \nYouth trip sign-ups will be open until March 22nd. Although early sign-ups will be prioritized\, ITA leadership and staff may adjust the final crews to maximize trip experience and provide opportunities for the greatest number of youth participants. To help facilitate trip assignments\, please sign up for your preferred trip and include alternate trips you could participate in\, should the preferred trip not be available. You will receive notification of trip assignment via email prior to March 31st. \nDifficulty Rating: \nHike: 3/5 Moderate – Backpacking several miles into and out of backcountry camp with day packs and trail tools. Elevation gain is moderate. \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Focus on log out\, brushing\, light tread work\, and clearing/scouting trail. \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! SUMMARY:2026 Little Elk - Women in the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Little Elk – Women in the Wild  \nProject Dates:  June 12-14  \nITA's Women in the Wild trail projects are designed to create a supportive\, empowering\, and fun environment where women can learn new skills\, build confidence\, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together\, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance\, and make a lasting impact on Idaho's public lands.  \nJoin us for a Women in the Wild project at Magee Cabin in the Coeur d'Alene Ranger District\, a serene\, wooded area perfect for a weekend of outdoor stewardship. ITA volunteers will focus on clearing brush\, fallen logs\, and other trail obstacles to keep the nearby trails safe\, accessible\, and enjoyable for all. This women-only event creates a supportive and empowering atmosphere\, allowing participants to work side by side while connecting with nature and fellow women trail stewards.  \n We'll enjoy the beauty of the forested surroundings\, take in the peaceful cabin setting\, and share camaraderie around trail work and the outdoors. This is a meaningful opportunity for women to get outside\, give back to local trails\, and make a lasting impact on the environment.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email.
