SUMMARY:2026 Liz Butte
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Liz Butte  \nProject Dates:   July 6-11  \nIn the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest\, Liz Butte sits high above the Lochsa River\, between the Clearwater and Bitterroot Mountains. To get to this project\, volunteers will have a chance to explore the Lolo Trail Corridor\, which climbs from Highway 12 and follows ridgelines through old growth forest\, meadows\, and peaks. This corridor is made up of the Nee Me Poo National Historic Trail plus the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and is about 90 miles long spanning from the western end at Musselshell Meadows to Lolo Pass where it passes into Montana.     \nWith food and a volunteer cook provided\, we'll car camp together in the shade along the road just below the lookout. We'll be a short hike or drive to both the lookout and to the Liz Butte Trail.  There are lots of trees and saw work expected at the beginning where the trail passes through an old burn scar for the first two miles.  The second two miles switchbacks down to Weitas Creek out of the burned areas and will need more tread work and brushing!   \nPart of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.  Over the coming years we plan to build off this work and continue this section where it climbs out of the other side of Weitas Creek.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Liz Butte Trail # 649 and Yokum Creek Trail #650  \nItinerary: This is a Monday to Saturday 6 day project. Meet at Liz Butte Monday afternoon to set up camp. Work Tuesday – Friday.  Saturday morning\, clean up camp and head home.    \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 3 hours from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 4.3 miles and 2600 feet of elevation loss from the top down to Weitas Creek and depending on trail conditions\, the crew could expect to clear up to this far. The first 1.8 miles are less steep through the burned area\, and the next section is shaded in thicker forest as it switchbacks down to the creek. Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile. \nProject Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2011\, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed.     \nVolunteer Spots Available: 7 of 12\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. SUMMARY:2026 Jackson Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Jackson Creek  \nProject Dates: July 10-12  \nJoin us for a three-day weekend project on the Jackson Creek Trail in the Salmo-Priest Wilderness. This beautiful stretch of trail is part of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail\, and our work will focus primarily on logging out downed trees and restoring safe passage through the wilderness. We'll camp together at the trailhead and hike about two miles to the work site each morning.  \nThis project is a collaborative effort with our partners at the Washington Trails Association (WTA). While their crew works east from the west end of Trail #311\, we'll head west from the east end\, meeting in the middle to reconnect this important wilderness route. It's a rewarding opportunity to be part of a cross-state partnership and help keep a nationally significant trail open and accessible.  \nMore info can be found on All Trails.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Jackson Creek Trail #311  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. We will have a camp on Thursday night\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. Work Friday until Sunday afternoon.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Jim Manning  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Priest River  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile    \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 2/5 Moderate– Trail climbs up about 1\,000 feet from camp at a steady incline. See the linked map for the elevation profile.   \nProject Work: 2/5 Moderate– Lots of crosscut work expected\, repeated sawing.  Carrying tools and day packs up to 5 miles each day.  Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian. Before you sign up\, please be sure you can attend. It is tough on our crew leaders when volunteers don't show up or cancel right before the project. This field is hidden when viewing the formProjectParticipant InformationName*\n SUMMARY:2026 Pend Oreille Divide
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Pend Oreille Divide  \nProject Dates:  July 17-19  \nAfter a scenic drive to Lunch Peak Lookout\, we'll begin a three-day backpacking project on the Pend Oreille Divide Trail. Idaho Trails Association has been steadily improving this trail for several years\, working from both the north and south ends. On this trip\, we'll hike to Pend Oreille Peak and continue trail work from there\, focusing on the four-mile middle section that connects our previous efforts and creates a more continuous\, accessible route.  \nFrom there\, the trail follows a high ridge with stunning views in every direction. We'll wind past several peaks—including Mount Pend Oreille—while taking in sweeping panoramas of the Purcell and Selkirk Mountains. This stretch is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, a 1\,000-mile route that ITA proudly helps maintain each year. Join us for a rewarding weekend of trail work in a spectacular alpine setting.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Pend Oreille Divide #67  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. We will have a camp Thursday night at the trailhead\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Beginning Friday morning for a day of trail work backpacking as we go\, camping nearby. Finishing Sunday afternoon.    \nFood Provided by ITA: No  \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Sandpoint    \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Distance will depend on the work we find\, up to eight miles. The trail stays on the ridge\, with net gain and loss of less than 1\,000 feet. Volunteers carrying their personal food and gear.    \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Work will mostly involve cutting trees and brush off the trail. Repeated digging or sawing. Carrying tools and days packs. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian. Before you sign up\, please be sure you can attend. SUMMARY:2026 Needles Route
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Needles Trail   \nProject Dates:  July 23-26  \nWe'll car camp at the serene Kennally Creek Campground along the creek in a mature forest. The trailhead starts right at camp\, and we'll work up the Needles Route Pack trail\, as it climbs high up to a ridge\, traveling past White Rock and Stump Lake to Needles Summit. The first mile and a half from camp get more regular maintenance but past the trail junction we can expect some fun crosscut work! The crew may also find some larger water drainage issues\, and can address this by digging new\, or clearing existing drains on the first few miles of the trail before it climbs higher. This area hosts a network of motorized and nonmotorized trails reaching peaks and lakes for exploring all over this section of the Salmon River Mountains.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Needles Route Pack Trail #101  \nItinerary: This is a four-day project. Meet Wednesday afternoon/evening\, if possible\, to set up camp and go over trail work basics and safety. Thursday – Saturday\, work full days on the trails. Sunday\, wrap up trail work in the morning\, clean up camp\, and head home.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Alisa and Gregg Rettschlag and Dan Appel   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from McCall  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 1.5 miles to that start of the project work. Uphill but a steady and shaded incline. 2500 feet of elevation gain over the 5.5 miles to the top. Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.   \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Saw work and brushing expected\, potential for tread or drainage work as needed. Carrying packs and tools. SUMMARY:2026 Harrison Lake
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Beth Goodnight \nProject Name:  Harrison Lake  \nProject Dates:  July 25-26  \nJoin us for a weekend of trail maintenance on the Harrison Lake Trail in the Selkirk Mountains of northern Idaho. This popular out‑and‑back route winds through lush subalpine forest and climbs to a beautiful alpine lake nestled among rugged granite ridges\, offering spectacular mountain views along the way.  \nOver the course of the weekend\, our focus will be on clearing loose and obstructive rocks from the trail\, improving footing and safety for hikers\, backpackers\, and horseback riders. The Harrison Lake Trail features rocky sections and granite slabs where loose rock can make travel difficult or unstable; our work will help create a smoother\, more sustainable tread while preserving the natural character of the route.  \nWhether you're an experienced trail volunteer or new to stewardship work\, this weekend promises meaningful work\, beautiful scenery\, and a chance to connect with fellow trail lovers.  \n More info can be found on All Trails.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Harrison Lake #217  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project. We will have a camp Friday night at the trailhead\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Beginning Saturday morning for a day of trail work\, camping near the trailhead. Finishing Sunday afternoon.    \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Herbert Klein  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Sandpoint    \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– The participants will be hiking up to Harrison Lake from the trailhead both days\, 4.7 miles round–trip with 1\,500 feet of elevation gain.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous- Work will mostly involve cutting trees and moving rocks from the trail. Carrying tools and day packs. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. SUMMARY:2026 Little Queens River - Women in the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Little Queens River – Women in the Wild  \nProject Dates: July 29 – August 2  \nITA's Women in the Wild trail projects are designed to create a supportive\, empowering\, and fun environment where women can learn new skills\, build confidence\, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together\, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance\, and make a lasting impact on Idaho's public lands.  \nITA volunteers will continue to chip away at clearing the Queens River loop as part of a long-term effort by the Forest Service\, ITA\, Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation and the Pulaski Users Group. Continuing our efforts over the last few years\, we will start on the Little Queens River side\, backpacking and moving camp up as we work up the trail. This beautiful loop\, on the less traveled side of the Sawtooth Wilderness\, is a gem. Large sections have been logged out in the last few years\, but the 2013 fire through here means no shortage of trees continue to fall. Back-to-back ITA crews will clear logs and cut back brush where it obscures the trail.   \nStarting from the Queens River Trailhead near Atlanta\, Idaho\, we'll backpack into camp at the junction of the Scenic Lake Trail. Depending on trail conditions\, we may stay here for the duration or bump camp further up once during the project. On the last day\, we'll hike out and swap out camp with the second backpacking crew coming in after us!  \nMore info on All Trails (for the whole loop)  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Little Queens River Trail #7454  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project\, beginning with our backpack into camp Wednesday morning. Welcome to car camp at the trailhead the evening before. Working Wednesday – Saturday\, maybe moving camp further up as work allows. Sunday hiking back to the trailhead and heading home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Kirsten Severud and Cindy Walker   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 3 hours from Idaho City  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 6 miles into camp\, 1500 feet of elevation gain for gentle but still an uphill climb. Carrying all personal gear and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Lots of saw work\, brushing\, and potentially some digging some tread work. Volunteers can choose trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. SUMMARY:2026 Settlers Cedar Grove
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Settlers Cedar Grove  \nProject Date: July 31 – August 2  \nIn this incredible area of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest is the Settlers Grove Ancient Cedar Grove. ITA will be working on the Settler's Grove Interpretive Trail\, which follows the west fork of Eagle Creek\, crossing over foot bridges through ancient cedars\, some estimated at over 600 years old. We will be car camping amongst these giants for a three-day project working on maintaining this popular and unique trail.    \nA fire in 2015 means smaller trees will fall on the trail each year\, and there are reports of thicker brush that will need to clear further down the trail. Last year\, the trail was logged out by the forest service and ITA volunteers. We will be maintaining it for continued use.   \nMore info and pictures available in this article from Onlyinyourstate.com and on All Trails.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Settler's Grove Interpretive Trail #162  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project.
