SUMMARY:2026 Little Queens River - Women in the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Little Queens River – Women in the Wild  \nProject Dates: July 29 – August 2  \nITA's Women in the Wild trail projects are designed to create a supportive\, empowering\, and fun environment where women can learn new skills\, build confidence\, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together\, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance\, and make a lasting impact on Idaho's public lands.  \nITA volunteers will continue to chip away at clearing the Queens River loop as part of a long-term effort by the Forest Service\, ITA\, Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation and the Pulaski Users Group. Continuing our efforts over the last few years\, we will start on the Little Queens River side\, backpacking and moving camp up as we work up the trail. This beautiful loop\, on the less traveled side of the Sawtooth Wilderness\, is a gem. Large sections have been logged out in the last few years\, but the 2013 fire through here means no shortage of trees continue to fall. Back-to-back ITA crews will clear logs and cut back brush where it obscures the trail.   \nStarting from the Queens River Trailhead near Atlanta\, Idaho\, we'll backpack into camp at the junction of the Scenic Lake Trail. Depending on trail conditions\, we may stay here for the duration or bump camp further up once during the project. On the last day\, we'll hike out and swap out camp with the second backpacking crew coming in after us!  \nMore info on All Trails (for the whole loop)  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Little Queens River Trail #7454  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project\, beginning with our backpack into camp Wednesday morning. Welcome to car camp at the trailhead the evening before. Working Wednesday – Saturday\, maybe moving camp further up as work allows. Sunday hiking back to the trailhead and heading home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Kirsten Severud and Cindy Walker   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 3 hours from Idaho City  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 6 miles into camp\, 1500 feet of elevation gain for gentle but still an uphill climb. Carrying all personal gear and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Lots of saw work\, brushing\, and potentially some digging some tread work. Volunteers can choose trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.   \nVolunteer Spots Available: 85 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. SUMMARY:2026 Twin Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Twin Lakes  \nProject Dates: August 5-9  \nHigh above Rapid River\, volunteers will work on clearing the trails that access Twin Lakes\, a pretty lake basin nestled at the base of Echols Mountain. Meeting at the trailhead just east of Huckleberry Campground\, we'll hike with day packs and some tools while a packer brings our gear about 4 miles to Bear Saddle\, where we'll camp for the first few days while working the trail to Twin Lakes. We'll then move camp ourselves (no pack support) to Twin Lakes and continue working on the Echols Ridge Trail that accesses the lakes from the northeast. These lakes are a hidden gem with great camping! Lots of trails coming from Rapid River intersect here\, and we'll work up and down the Twin Lakes Creek and Echols Ridge trails as far as time allows. A packer will come to retrieve our gear on the last day.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Echols Ridge Trail #187\, Twin Lakes Creek Trail #328  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project. SUMMARY:2026 Upper Payette Lake - Family Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Upper Payette Lake – Family Weekend  \nProject Dates: August 8-9  \nVolunteers will gather at Upper Payette Lake outside of McCall for a day of weekend camping and trail work. We'll work up the Deep Creek Trail and Cougar Creek Trails\, brushing and opening trail junctions. Starting at the lake\, the trail climbs up toward the ridge. Deep Creek Trail goes all the way up to Granite Lake\, connects to the Cougar Creek trail\, and then hits a connector trail back down\, making a loop.   \nWe'll camp nearby along Upper Payette Lake\, where this unique project invites families with kids to come camp together and do some simple trail work! \nWe're partnering with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation for this family weekend project\, a first for both groups! Families with kids of all ages are welcome to join and camp with us. Please note that childcare is NOT available; all children will need to be supervised at all times.   \nMore info on All Trails   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Deep Creek Trail #336\, Cougar Creek Trail #114\, Connector Trail #337  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project. Welcome to camp starting Friday afternoon. Meeting by Saturday morning\, for a full workday. Sunday\, wrapping up work early afternoon\, and heading home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Kelly Hewes   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 40 minutes from McCall   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Deep Creek Trail Climbs 1\,300 feet from the lake to the first trail junction. Carrying tools and day packs. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Deep Creek Trail Climbs 1\,300 feet from the lake to the first trail junction. SUMMARY:2026 Windy Bill
DESCRIPTION:August 5 Project Update: The scope of this project has changed. See updated details below.\n \nFire Notice: We are aware there is a fire burning near the project area. We want to assure all volunteers that the crew will not be in danger. The U.S. Forest Service has given us the all clear to proceed and are monitoring the situation closely. Both the crew and ITA staff are in communication with them the whole time. Volunteer safety is always our top priority. \nProject Name:  Windy Bill  \nProject Dates:   August 9-15  \nIn partnership with the Great Burn Conservation Alliance (GBCA)\, volunteers will gather for a week of trail work near the Proposed Great Burn Wilderness. We'll work on the Scurvy Mountain Trail and the Windy Bill Trail\, focusing on logging out and cutting to clear the way. This section is part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, and ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1\,000-mile trail each year. \nThis is now a backpacking project. Gear will be packed in to your first camp below Scurvy Mountain Lookout (uphill!)\, with wonderful views overlooking the Moose Mountains\, Cayuse and Kelly Creek drainages\, and Scurvy Lake. From base camp\, the crew will work on log out\, bumping camp further in as needed. \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions. \nTrails: Windy Bill Trail # 351 and Scurvy Mountain Trail #524  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Camp the night before and meet at Kelly Creek Trailhead to carpool the last few miles on Sunday morning. When at the trailhead\, drop gear with packers and hike into camp. Work Monday-Friday\, logging out and cutting trail\, bumping camp as needed. On Saturday\, the crew will backpack out to the trailhead and return to their vehicles. \nFood Provided by ITA: No — volunteers bring their own food and will be reimbursed after the project via per diem. SUMMARY:2026 Cataract Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Cataract Creek  \nProject Dates:  August 15-16  \nJoin us for an incredible food-supported trail project on Cataract Creek! We'll be based at Rodney and his family's beautiful cabin\, where they'll be generously preparing hearty meals for the crew throughout the weekend. While we'll be camping outside the cabin\, volunteers will enjoy access to the cabin's restroom facilities—a welcome comfort after a day on the trail. \nOur work will focus on reopening Cataract Creek Trail\, a remote gem in the Coeur d'Alene Ranger District that has been inaccessible for many years. We'll clear fallen trees and brush to restore safe passage and bring this beautiful trail back to life for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. \nWe'll car camp just outside the cabin\, only a short walk from the trail\, making for easy mornings and relaxing evenings around camp. With delicious home-cooked meals\, convenient amenities\, and the chance to help restore a long-neglected trail\, this project offers a rewarding weekend of hard work\, great company\, and a meaningful impact on public lands. \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Cataract Creek #309  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project. We will have a camp Friday night at the trailhead\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Beginning Saturday morning for a day of trail work\, camping near the trailhead. SUMMARY:2026 Lost Creek Trail
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Lost Creek  \nProject Dates:  August 29-30  \nJoin ITA for a rewarding weekend of trail work near Wallace\, Idaho\, as we focus on maintaining the Lost Creek Trail. This scenic trail meanders alongside its namesake creek for miles before ascending to the stunning Bobtail Ridge. Our efforts will include clearing fallen logs and brushing through lush\, dense forests\, preserving the trail's accessibility. Each afternoon\, we'll return to camp by Lost Creek\, sharing camaraderie in this serene setting. Your hard work will help prevent the forest service from closing the trail\, ensuring continued access to this breathtaking corner of north Idaho.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Lost Creek Trail #153  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. SUMMARY:2026 Upper Yellow Jacket
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Upper Yellow Jacket  \nProject Dates: August 30 – September 5  \nIn this rugged and remote corner of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, volunteers will be car camping at Yellowjacket Lake Campground for a week\, working on Upper Yellowjacket Creek. A long drive into this project is rewarded with big views of Sugarloaf Rock and Yellowjacket Lake right in camp. Just south of the iconic Bighorn Crags and Yellowjacket Mountains\, we'll be working on log out and tread work between Frog Meadows and Yellow Jacket Guard Station. Lots of crosscut work is expected! Come early or stay after to explore\, nearby are Hoodoo Meadows\, the Big Horn Crags\, and McEleny Peak.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Upper Yellow Jacket Creek #6038  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Sunday\, meeting in the afternoon to set up camp. Project work Monday-Friday\, with a day off as needed to relax or explore. Saturday\, wrap up any work\, pack up camp\, and head home!  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Barry Miller\, Chris Keilty\, and Matt McDonagh    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 3 hours form Challis  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Starting from the road\, the trail drops down into the creek bed\, losing 1400 feet of elevation over 5 miles. Longer hikes into work each day\, and uphill back to camp. Tools and day packs are carried into work each day. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Rating: 4/5 Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2024 Red Rock Fire\, about three miles from the trailhead. Lots of down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed.   \nVolunteer Spots Available: 85 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian. Before you sign up\, please be sure you can attend.
