SUMMARY:2026 Liz Butte
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Liz Butte  \nProject Dates:   July 6-11  \nIn the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest\, Liz Butte sits high above the Lochsa River\, between the Clearwater and Bitterroot Mountains. To get to this project\, volunteers will have a chance to explore the Lolo Trail Corridor\, which climbs from Highway 12 and follows ridgelines through old growth forest\, meadows\, and peaks. This corridor is made up of the Nee Me Poo National Historic Trail plus the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and is about 90 miles long spanning from the western end at Musselshell Meadows to Lolo Pass where it passes into Montana.     \nWith food and a volunteer cook provided\, we'll car camp together in the shade along the road just below the lookout. We'll be a short hike or drive to both the lookout and to the Liz Butte Trail.  There are lots of trees and saw work expected at the beginning where the trail passes through an old burn scar for the first two miles.  The second two miles switchbacks down to Weitas Creek out of the burned areas and will need more tread work and brushing!   \nPart of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.  Over the coming years we plan to build off this work and continue this section where it climbs out of the other side of Weitas Creek.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Liz Butte Trail # 649 and Yokum Creek Trail #650  \nItinerary: This is a Monday to Saturday 6 day project. Meet at Liz Butte Monday afternoon to set up camp. Work Tuesday – Friday.  Saturday morning\, clean up camp and head home.    \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 3 hours from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 4.3 miles and 2600 feet of elevation loss from the top down to Weitas Creek and depending on trail conditions\, the crew could expect to clear up to this far. The first 1.8 miles are less steep through the burned area\, and the next section is shaded in thicker forest as it switchbacks down to the creek. Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile. \nProject Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2011\, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed.     \nVolunteer Spots Available: 94 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. SUMMARY:2026 Scotchman Peak
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Scotchman Peak  \nProject Dates: July 7 \nJoin us for a one-day trail project on the iconic Scotchman Peak Trail\, one of North Idaho’s most popular and rewarding hikes near Clark Fork. Known for its steep climb\, rugged terrain\, and sweeping summit views\, this challenging 7.6-mile out-and-back trail gains over 3\,700 feet in elevation and offers an unforgettable high-country experience. \nVolunteers will work to improve trail conditions by addressing erosion\, clearing brush\, and maintaining the trail corridor to keep it safe and sustainable for hikers. With heavy use throughout the season\, this trail requires ongoing care to protect the tread and surrounding environment. \nNo prior trail maintenance experience is necessary — volunteers of all skill levels are welcome\, and all tools and instruction will be provided. This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself\, enjoy incredible summit views\, and give back to one of the most beloved trails in the Idaho Panhandle. \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Scotchman Peak Trail #65 \nItinerary: This is a one day project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for One-Day Projects  \nCrew Leader: Barbara Sammut  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 20 minutes from Clark Fork \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Hike in is a steady uphill climb. The four mile climb uphill gains about 3\,600 feet. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Work will include sawing\, brush removal\, and tread repair. Repeated digging and sawing. Carrying tools and day packs. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.   \nVolunteer Spots: 10 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. SUMMARY:2026 Jackson Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Jackson Creek  \nProject Dates: July 10-12  \nJoin us for a three-day weekend project on the Jackson Creek Trail in the Salmo-Priest Wilderness. This beautiful stretch of trail is part of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail\, and our work will focus primarily on logging out downed trees and restoring safe passage through the wilderness. We'll camp together at the trailhead and hike about two miles to the work site each morning.  \nThis project is a collaborative effort with our partners at the Washington Trails Association (WTA). While their crew works east from the west end of Trail #311\, we'll head west from the east end\, meeting in the middle to reconnect this important wilderness route. It's a rewarding opportunity to be part of a cross-state partnership and help keep a nationally significant trail open and accessible.  \nMore info can be found on All Trails.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Jackson Creek Trail #311  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. We will have a camp on Thursday night\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. Work Friday until Sunday afternoon.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Jim Manning  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Priest River  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile    \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 2/5 Moderate– Trail climbs up about 1\,000 feet from camp at a steady incline. See the linked map for the elevation profile.   \nProject Work: 2/5 Moderate– Lots of crosscut work expected\, repeated sawing.  Carrying tools and day packs up to 5 miles each day.  Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 4 miles and 2500 feet of elevation gain to the top. Steady incline into the basin but gets steeper as it heads up to the peak. Tools and day packs are carried into work each day. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2012\, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed. SUMMARY:2026 High Dive - Deep Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: High Dive – Deep Creek  \nProject Dates: July 12-18  \nTo the west\, Six Lakes Basin\, Deep Creek\, and the southern Seven Devils Mountains\, and trails that lead into Hells Canyon and the Snake River. To the east\, Echols Mountain and trails heading to Twin Lakes in the head of the Rapid River drainage. This trip puts volunteers on the ridge in the middle\, exploring both sides! With incredible views\, volunteers will car camp along Black Lake Road (before the road deteriorates in quality closer to the lake) and work on the three trails that start right by camp. Log out\, brushing\, tread work\, drainage; each trail will bring a unique trail work experience each day.  \nDeep Creek Trail descends down\, following the creek into Hells Canyon\, where ITA will be working on the bottom section earlier in the spring. From the road\, it drops into the basin where several springs feed into Deep Creek. Horse Pasture Basin Trail is a main trail for stock and backpackers to access the southern Seven Devils\, into Six Lakes Basin\, Black Lake\, and Casey Mountain. This trail has less tree cover\, and more big views! Echols Ridge stays in the trees as it drops from the road and winds around Echols Peak. A second crew will be out in the fall to continue working on this trail\, backpacking into Twin Lakes hidden on the other side of Echols Mountain.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@#idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Deep Creek Trail #219\, Horse Pasture Basin Trail #173\, Echols Ridge Trail #187  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Sunday\, meeting in the afternoon to set up camp. Project work Monday-Friday\, with a day off as needed to relax or explore. Saturday\, wrap up any work\, pack up camp\, and head home!  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: TBD \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 30 minutes from Council  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile for the first few miles of each trail Deep Creek \, Horse Pasture Basin\, and Echols Ridge Trail.  \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous –  Each trail has some elevation gain and loss\, between 1000 and 1600 feet depending on trail conditions and how far we can work on each one. No more than three miles of hiking one way per day is expected. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Saw work and brushing\, with some digging and swinging tools. Potential for some tread work and rock fall removal. Carrying tools and day packs short distances. SUMMARY:2026 Pend Oreille Divide
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Pend Oreille Divide  \nProject Dates:  July 17-19  \nAfter a scenic drive to Lunch Peak Lookout\, we'll begin a three-day backpacking project on the Pend Oreille Divide Trail. Idaho Trails Association has been steadily improving this trail for several years\, working from both the north and south ends. On this trip\, we'll hike to Pend Oreille Peak and continue trail work from there\, focusing on the four-mile middle section that connects our previous efforts and creates a more continuous\, accessible route.  \nFrom there\, the trail follows a high ridge with stunning views in every direction. We'll wind past several peaks—including Mount Pend Oreille—while taking in sweeping panoramas of the Purcell and Selkirk Mountains. This stretch is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, a 1\,000-mile route that ITA proudly helps maintain each year. Join us for a rewarding weekend of trail work in a spectacular alpine setting.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Pend Oreille Divide #67  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. We will have a camp Thursday night at the trailhead\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Beginning Friday morning for a day of trail work backpacking as we go\, camping nearby. Finishing Sunday afternoon.    \nFood Provided by ITA: No  \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Sandpoint    \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Distance will depend on the work we find\, up to eight miles. The trail stays on the ridge\, with net gain and loss of less than 1\,000 feet. Volunteers carrying their personal food and gear.    \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Work will mostly involve cutting trees and brush off the trail. Repeated digging or sawing. Carrying tools and days packs. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian. Before you sign up\, please be sure you can attend. It is tough on our crew leaders when volunteers don't show up or cancel right before the project. This field is hidden when viewing the formProjectParticipant InformationName*\n SUMMARY:2026 Bean Bacon Trailblazers
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Bean Bacon Trailblazers  \nProject Dates: July 19 – 25  \nThis weeklong project will work on the Bean-Bacon loop\, a spectacular backcountry route in the Bitterroot Mountains that winds through old-growth forest\, high ridge lines\, meadows\, alpine lakes\, and along the Wild & Scenic St. Joe River.  \nOver the course of the week\, we'll work on this beautiful wilderness loop to finish clearing downed logs\, brushing\, and restoring tread so the trail remains accessible and enjoyable for hikers and backpackers. The Bean-Bacon loop is known for its scenic variety — towering pines\, mossy streams\, mountain views\, and open meadows — making this an unforgettable place to work and explore.  \nWe'll be packed into our backcountry base camp by mules to a camp on the St. Joe River\, where a camp cook will provide meals for the week. From camp\, we'll organize into work groups each day to tackle remaining maintenance needs. Expect hands-on trail maintenance — no specialized experience is required\, and tools and guidance will be provided — along with plenty of time to enjoy the setting and camaraderie of a multi-day trail crew.  \nThis is a unique opportunity to experience a supported wilderness camp and help steward a stunning backcountry trail alongside fellow volunteers.  \nMore Information: All Trails for the Bean Bacon Loop   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrail: Bean Bacon #66  \nItinerary: Arrive at Spruce Tree Campground Saturday afternoon/evening. Meet packer Sunday morning to hike into base camp; the packer will pack gear. Work Monday-Friday with a day off mid-week to relax\, fish\, and explore. Saturday morning\, the packer will return to bring gear back to the trailhead. There is a potential to move camp mid-week\, depending on project work. Crew leader will specify the meeting time & place in their pre-trip emails.  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Packed Supported Projects\, Food Provided  \nCrew Leader: Don McIntosh  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1.5 hours from Avery\, Idaho   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have some experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous –  The hike to camp from the trailhead is about 5.6 miles\, slight uphill on the way in with several gains and losses of elevation totaling 2\,500 feet. We will take Line Creek/Broken Leg trail to our camp. Once at camp\, we'll make day trips out to the trail work\, with the hike getting longer each day as we work further from camp. Bacon Loop Trail  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Repeated digging or sawing\, the potential for some heavy lifting. Carrying tools and packs up to five miles each day. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. SUMMARY:2026 Seven Devils - Horse Heaven
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Seven Devils – Horse Heaven \nProject Dates: July 19-25 \n Horse Heaven sits at 8200' in elevation\, high between the northern and southern Seven Devils Mountains\, with stunning views of each. Here on the grassy hill is where we'll base camp for a week of trail work. From camp\, the crew will head south to clear towards Ruth Lake. This trip will offer big views of the Seven Devils\, Hells Canyon\, and Rapid River drainage with its rugged\, steep terrain.  \nIt's a long hike to get here\, but we will have pack support to bring in most of our gear\, carrying only day packs and some tools. Steep climbs are rewarded with panoramic views\, and we might even see a few mountain goats! ITA has worked in the Seven Devils for many years\, but this remote section gets less love than other places. ITA has two weeklong projects this year to focus on the southern side\, and these trails are just as stunning as those on the iconic Seven Devils Loop trail!   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Black Lake-Horse Heaven Trail #214\, Carbonate Hill Trail # 189   \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Meeting at the Trailhead Saturday night for an early pack in on Sunday. Sunday– hike/pack into the base camp. Work clearing trail Monday-Friday. On Saturday\, pack stock returns to bring gear back to the trailhead by midafternoon; camp over night at the trailhead or head home.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support  \nCrew Leader: Alex Cravener and Chris Keilty    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1.5 hours from Riggins  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile for Windy Saddle to Horse Heaven and from Horse Heaven to Ruth Lake   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nHike: 5/5 Very Strenuous – Windy Saddle Trailhead to Horse Heaven is about 12.5 miles\, with 2500-3000 feet of gain and loss. The first 10 miles is relatively easy hiking\, with a steeper last two miles as the trail switchbacks up to Horse Heaven. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Lots of trees and brush expected for repeated saw work. Some heavy lifting or digging. All trail work will be a short but potentially steep hike from camp\, as the trails all drop in elevation after Horse Heaven. Working up to 3.5 miles away from base camp. Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian. Before you sign up\, please be sure you can attend. SUMMARY:2026 Porcupine Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Porcupine Meadow  \nProject Dates:   July 22-26  \nVolunteers will explore the meadows and ridgelines on the southern end of the Gospel Hump Wilderness on this backpacking project! Great views of the Gospel Hump begin on the drive to camp\, as the trailhead is off the 444 road.  This recently improved road is a main access corridor into the Gospel Hump Wilderness. With access to alpine lakes\, mountain peaks (including Gospel Peak (8156') for which this wilderness is named) ending at Square Mountain Lookout\, it's worth taking time to enjoy the drive in!  \nFrom Moores Campground we'll backpack 7 miles into our base camp. The first two miles descend from the trailhead to Anchor Creek. The next 2.5 miles the trail climbs up to Plummer Point\, where it levels out and follows the ridge for the last 2.5 miles to camp. Under Marble and Ace Buttes\, we'll camp near Porcupine Meadows. We'll work as far down Moores Trail as we can over the course of the project\, cutting out logs\, cutting back brush\, and improving tread as needed.  This trail eventually connects to the Salmon River\, and ITA has worked on several of these southern trails over the year\, including Johnson Saddle and Sheep Creek.    \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Hump Trail #313 and Moores Trail #312  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project.  Great car camping at the trailhead for folks to come out the night before. Meeting at the trailhead on Wednesday morning ready to backpack into Porcupine Meadows. Base camp here\, working up and down the trail each day.  Sunday\, packing up camp and hiking back to the trailhead to head home!    \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Pam Bond and Dave Beck    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 40 min to Grangeville   \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Only 1000 feet of net elevation gain and loss over the 7 miles into camp\, with some steep sections as it climbs up to the ridge.  Carrying all personal gear and trail tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. Sections of this trail burned in 2024\, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed. SUMMARY:2026 Needles Route
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Needles Trail   \nProject Dates:  July 23-26  \nWe'll car camp at the serene Kennally Creek Campground along the creek in a mature forest. The trailhead starts right at camp\, and we'll work up the Needles Route Pack trail\, as it climbs high up to a ridge\, traveling past White Rock and Stump Lake to Needles Summit. The first mile and a half from camp get more regular maintenance but past the trail junction we can expect some fun crosscut work! The crew may also find some larger water drainage issues\, and can address this by digging new\, or clearing existing drains on the first few miles of the trail before it climbs higher. This area hosts a network of motorized and nonmotorized trails reaching peaks and lakes for exploring all over this section of the Salmon River Mountains.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Needles Route Pack Trail #101  \nItinerary: This is a four-day project. SUMMARY:2026 Harrison Lake
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Beth Goodnight \nProject Name:  Harrison Lake  \nProject Dates:  July 25-26  \nJoin us for a weekend of trail maintenance on the Harrison Lake Trail in the Selkirk Mountains of northern Idaho. This popular out‑and‑back route winds through lush subalpine forest and climbs to a beautiful alpine lake nestled among rugged granite ridges\, offering spectacular mountain views along the way.  \nOver the course of the weekend\, our focus will be on clearing loose and obstructive rocks from the trail\, improving footing and safety for hikers\, backpackers\, and horseback riders. The Harrison Lake Trail features rocky sections and granite slabs where loose rock can make travel difficult or unstable; our work will help create a smoother\, more sustainable tread while preserving the natural character of the route.  \nWhether you're an experienced trail volunteer or new to stewardship work\, this weekend promises meaningful work\, beautiful scenery\, and a chance to connect with fellow trail lovers.  \n More info can be found on All Trails.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Harrison Lake #217  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project. We will have a camp Friday night at the trailhead\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Beginning Saturday morning for a day of trail work\, camping near the trailhead. Finishing Sunday afternoon.    \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Herbert Klein  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Sandpoint    \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– The participants will be hiking up to Harrison Lake from the trailhead both days\, 4.7 miles round–trip with 1\,500 feet of elevation gain.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous- Work will mostly involve cutting trees and moving rocks from the trail. Carrying tools and day packs. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian. Before you sign up\, please be sure you can attend. SUMMARY:2026 Rapid River - Frank Church
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Rapid River – Frank Church  \nProject Dates: July 26 – August 1  \nThere is a lesser-known\, but equally impressive\, Rapid River that runs through the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Starting near Seafoam Guard Station\, it cuts through a rugged canyon and ends at the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Volunteers will car camp for a week in this beautiful remote section of the Salmon Challis National Forest and work on the Rapid River Trail.   \nWe'll car camp together in an aspen grove\, near the Seafoam Guard Station\, and carpool the last new miles up to the trailhead. The trail starts at the end of the road\, and volunteers will begin each day with a river crossing. After this\, the trail stays up along the canyon wall and follows along the dramatic river canyon overlooking Rapid River. The trail alternates through forested areas\, talus slopes\, and through several side creeks. We'll work on log out\, with some potential tread work and brushing.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.   \nTrails: Rapid River Trail #4007  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Sunday\, meeting in the afternoon to set up camp. Project work Monday-Friday\, with a day off as needed to relax or explore. Saturday\, wrap up any work\, pack up camp\, and head home!  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 30 minutes from Stanley   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. SUMMARY:2026 Wilderness Immersion Cold Meadows - Application Page
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Frank Church Wilderness Immersion – Application  \nTwo open spots still!   \nBecause of the unique nature of this long project and the remote location\, we ask interested volunteers to fill out an application. You must read the entire project and difficulty description before applying.   \nThis fly-in project will drop volunteers deep in the backcountry for an extended project working on trails in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Starting from Cold Meadows backcountry airstrip\, we'll work on clearing up the Cottonwood Creek Trail. We'll work on a reroute in one of the meadows the trail passes through\, around a section flooded by beavers\, started last year. The crew will also work on clearing the trail toward Black Lake and beyond\, with potential to bump camp along as work allows.   \nThe Cottonwood Creek Trail connects with several other trails to form trail loops through meadows\, up and over ridges\, and past several peaks and lakes. ITA has been working on clearing trails in this area for many years now\, with no shortage of downfall each year. This is a great opportunityto work in a very remote area of the Frank Church and help preserve a remote trail system.   \nITA is partnering with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Wilderness Foundation\, who will also have a crew out for the duration. We'll camp separately and be working on different sections of trail but there may be opportunity for some inter-crew socialization and support on the project work. Having these projects at the same time allows us to maximize pack support opportunities for both crews in this very remote area!  \nFlying in and out of Cascade\, we'll have pack support available to bring some of our camping gear\, food\, and tools into a base camp near the confluence of Farrow and Cottonwood Creek\, about 6 miles of easy hiking. Halfway through\, a food resupply will be flown into the airstrip\, and the crew will hike back to get it. At the end of the project\, pack support returns to bring gear back to the airstrip for a flight back home early the last day. As the crew progresses further\, we may decide it's best to move our camp closer to work; pack support is not available to bump camp\, so this will be backpacking.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Cottonwood Creek Trail #41\, Black Lake Trail # 238  \nItinerary: This is a 15-day project. Volunteers will join a pre-trip Zoom meeting/planning session in the months prior to the trip. Pack support in and out of a backcountry camp\, with a self-supported backpacking trip further up the trail as work allows.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: More information about planning extended backcountry trips will be available to the crew Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Glenn Florence and Michelle Florence   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying from Cascade  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50 - Due if selected as a volunteer   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \n Difficulty Rating  \nThe difficulty on the project is not so much the distance or work\, but the duration of the experience! You do not have to be an expert thru hiker or seasoned trail crew veteran to join\, but you must be willing to participate in the pre-trip preparation to ensure your success and safety.   \nExperience with backpacking and being in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear is mandatory for this project. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. It is expected that volunteers will begin training for this project upon acceptance.   \nYou will be asked to prepare fifteen days' worth of backcountry meals prior to leaving. Crew leaders can help advise during the pre-trip meetings\, but ultimately you are responsible for your food.  \nIf having the right gear to be safe and comfortable is a limiting factor\, volunteers may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.  \nYou will be spending fifteen days with no access to any normal comforts\, no hot showers or bathrooms\, sleeping on the ground\, rain or shine\, etc. It will be awesome and life-changing!  \nYou will be out of direct contact with friends and family for fifteen days. In an emergency\, either at home or in the field\, there is no quick way to return to civilization. In the event of an emergency\, crew leaders will have satellite messengers to coordinate evacuation if necessary.  \nFlexibility is also very important\, as trail projects of this length rarely go perfectly according to Plan A. You will be expected to work together as a crew and\, if necessary\, through InReach contact with the Forest Service and ITA staff\, to help brainstorm solutions and overcome obstacles as a team.   \nReading all required information\, communicating with your crew leaders\, and arriving at the project 100% prepared is crucial to this project. Crew leaders reserve the right to ask you not to participate at the trailhead if they feel you show up unprepared (for example\, brand new boots out of the box not broken in or arriving with not enough food).  \nYou must be ready and willing to commit to the entire 15 days. Having folks bail right before the trip or after just a few days dramatically and unfairly impacts the rest of the crew.   \nGet a bonus point for reading by putting "I promise I read the description!" in the first section of your application. I know it's a lot of information\, but we want folks to take the risks of an extended trip seriously!  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Six miles from the airstrip to the base camp. Downhill into camp. Past camp\, the hike gets more strenuous as the trail climbs up and over the ridge above Black Lake. See the linked map for the elevation profile. \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Improving tread\, and creek crossings when needed. SUMMARY:2026 Settlers Cedar Grove
DESCRIPTION:Venue Change Notice as of May 11: Please be aware that this project may be relocated. This winter\, the access road to Settler's Grove suffered significant storm damage\, including downed trees and multiple washouts. The U.S. Forest Service is not confident the road will be cleared and repaired before the project date. ITA is currently exploring alternative trail sites in the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River area. The Crew Leader will send an email approximately one month before the project with the confirmed location and scope of work. Thank you for your patience and for volunteering! \nProject Name:  Settlers Cedar Grove  \nProject Date: July 31 – August 2  \nIn this incredible area of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest is the Settlers Grove Ancient Cedar Grove. ITA will be working on the Settler's Grove Interpretive Trail\, which follows the west fork of Eagle Creek\, crossing over foot bridges through ancient cedars\, some estimated at over 600 years old. We will be car camping amongst these giants for a three-day project working on maintaining this popular and unique trail.    \nA fire in 2015 means smaller trees will fall on the trail each year\, and there are reports of thicker brush that will need to clear further down the trail. Last year\, the trail was logged out by the forest service and ITA volunteers. We will be maintaining it for continued use.   \nMore info and pictures available in this article from Onlyinyourstate.com and on All Trails.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Settler's Grove Interpretive Trail #162  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Meet Friday morning (welcome to camp starting Thursday!) Return to camp after each workday. Sunday\, wrap up by lunch and head home.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Tom McLaughlin  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 2 hours from Coeur d'Alene  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile  \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \n Difficulty Rating  \nHike: 2/5 Moderate– The entire trail is five miles long\, with very little elevation gain in the first half for an exceptionally pleasant hike. After about 2.5 miles\, the trail begins to climb up towards Bloom Peak with a steeper incline. Carrying day packs and tools\, the distance we hike will be determined by the work to be done. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Brushing and saw work\, digging\, and swinging tools to clear any logs out of the trail. Carrying tools and day packs short distances. Volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace.
