SUMMARY:2026 Main Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Main Salmon  \nProject Dates:   April 23-29  \nThe Salmon River cuts through the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, through deep granite canyons filled with a rich history. ITA is sending a crew to spend a week taking in the pristine wilderness and helping repair tread damage caused by effects from a wildfire and flooding along the Salmon River Trail.  The crew will take a thrilling jet boat ride from the Carey Creek boat ramp to camp at Bargamin Creek for the week. From base camp\, the crew will address major tread work on the section of the trail between Bargamin Creek and Rattlesnake Creek. Working with Forest Service staff\, this is a chance for some hands-on experience with big rock work!   \nITA is partnering with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Wilderness Foundation\, who will also have a crew out for the duration. This allows us to double up efforts and resources to make a big impact on this section! This section of trail is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, and ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.  This is a great project for those looking to get out early in the season and learn or hone in on some more advanced trail work skills for the upcoming year.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Salmon River Trail #96  \nItinerary: This is a Thursday – Wednesday\, weeklong project.  Meeting at Carey Creek Boat Ramp early Thursday to be taken into camp.  Working Thursday – Tuesday\, with a rest day as needed.  On Wednesday the jet boat returns and brings the crew back to the boat ramp.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Think of the jetboat as your "mule." Crew leader will provide more information closer to the trip as weight/bulk limitations are set by the boat captain.  Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Riggins    \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear.  This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 2/5 Moderate – All work is within 2 miles of camp. The Salmon River Trail follows gently along the river grade. Carrying day packs and tools.   \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Tread work\, rock work\, rigging (using a mechanical advantage to move large rocks) could mean digging and heavy lifting. The weather in April can be unpredictable\, so please pack accordingly!  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 1 of 10\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Project Sign-up for Youth Projects\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please fill out this application form for yourself (if over 18) or for your child. SUMMARY:2026 Coxey Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Coxey Creek    \nProject Dates: May 9-15  \nThis is a fly-in trip into some of the most remote country in the lower 48. The crew will fly into the Cabin Creek backcountry airstrip in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and backpack up the Big Creek Trail to base camp at the confluence with Coxey Creek. From here\, the crew will work up Coxey Creek trail\, which follows the creek as it climbs toward Crescent Meadows\, approximately 4.7 miles. Coxey Creek is part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, and ITA worked here in 2023\, where they cleared the first three miles of trail. This crew will work to reclear this first section and push forward!   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Coxey Creek Trail #50  \nItinerary: This is a Saturday – Friday weeklong project. Meet at the McCall airport early Saturday morning to fly in\, swapping out with the previous crew. Hike to basecamp at Coxey Hole\, carrying all tools and personal gear. Work\, bump camp as needed. Return to the airstrip by Thursday evening. Friday morning\, picked up by the plane to head back to McCall.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem. More information here    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile for the hike into camp and the hike up Coxey Creek   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Slight uphill on the way in\, but gradual with ups and downs. Carrying all personal gear and tools. The hike into project work will get longer each day as we cut further in; the trail is 4.7 miles long with a steady uphill climb along the creek to Crescent Meadows. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. Tools and gear will be carried into the project site\, with some potential to move camp while clearing the trail. This area burned 10 years ago\, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work and some treadwork may also be needed. You can expect a wide range of weather conditions in late May\, please pack accordingly.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 1 of 10\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Project Sign-up for Youth Projects\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please fill out this application form for yourself (if over 18) or for your child. SUMMARY:2026 Sixty-Two Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Sixty-Two Ridge  \nProject Dates:   May 24-30  \nDeep in the beautiful Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness\, we'll work up the Sixty-Two Ridge Trail on a remote section of the Idaho Centennial Trail. We'll work on the switchbacks and beyond as it climbs above the Selway River. Gear will be packed into our backcountry camp along the Wild and Scenic Selway River. Starting from the Race Creek trailhead\, we'll hike about 12 miles to camp at Bar Creek on the Selway River Trail\, where we'll set up for the week. Each day\, we'll work higher up the ridge\, returning to camp each afternoon. At the end of the week\, pack stock will return to bring our gear back to camp.   \nThis section of the Selway is a great low-elevation\, early season trail\, very popular with hikers\, backpackers\, and equestrians. The Sixty-Two Ridge Trail climbs above the river\, connecting with several trails in the heart of the Selway- Bitterroot Wilderness. ITA worked on the switchbacks in 2025\, and this crew will continue to focus on improving the switchbacks that are beginning to slough off the hill\, as well as log out and brushing.  This crew's work will help support a Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation Crew getting packed in later in the season.  This combined effort promises to make a big impact on this section of the ICT!   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Sixty-Two Ridge Trail #606  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project.  Meet at Race Creek Sunday morning to drop gear with packers and hike in. Welcome to car camp the evening before at the trailhead.  Monday-Friday\, working up Sixty-Two Ridge. Rest day as needed. Saturday pack stock returns to bring gear back to the trailhead.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 15 min from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile for the Hike to Camp and the Sixtytwo Ridge Trail   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – 12 miles into camp along the Selway River trail which has lots of ups and downs but not a lot of total elevation gain. Carrying day packs\, maybe some tools into camp. From camp\, Sixty-Two Ridge switchbacks steeply up the hill before leveling out along the ridge. See the linked maps for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Focus on tread work\, with increasing climbs to work each day. Improving switchbacks\, digging\, and swinging tools. Some log out and brushing. The weather in May can be unpredictable\, so please pack accordingly! SUMMARY:2026 Marsh Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Marsh Creek  \nProject Dates: May 29-31  \nIn the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, volunteers will help clear the Marsh Creek Trail. Just off Highway 21\, we'll car camp near Lola Creek Campground and work on the first four miles towards the Middle Fork of the Salmon River where past fires in the area mean trees continue to fall\, blocking access. Brush and falling rocks also impact the trail each year. After work each day\, we'll return to camp near the trailhead.  \nThis trail offers hikers\, backpackers\, fishermen\, and hot spring enthusiasts a chance to explore the headwaters of the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Salmon River. This section is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, which ITA is dedicated to continuing to help maintain each year.   \nMore info on All Trails   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Marsh Creek Trail #237  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. Meeting at camp Thursday evening\, two full days of work Friday and Saturday. Sunday\, wrapping up work and heading home. If needed\, we may have room for folks to arrive Friday evening to work Saturday/Sunday\, please contact trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Mark Sugden and Terry Paterson    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 25 minutes from Stanley   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 2/5 Moderate – 4.3 miles to Big Hole\, slight downhill on the hike in\, uphill on the hike out – about 300 feet net elevation gain/loss. Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.   \nProject Work: 2/5 Moderate – Log out\, brushing\, light tread\, clearing/scouting below. You can expect a wide range of weather conditions in May; please keep an eye on the weather and plan accordingly! SUMMARY:2026 Beetop Roundtop
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Beetop-Roundtop  \nProject Dates: May 30-31  \nThe Beetop–Roundtop Trail is widely considered one of the most beautiful trails in northern Idaho\, and Idaho Trails Association has been helping keep it in great shape since 2016.  \nDuring this two-day project\, we'll focus on tread work\, brushing\, and sawing out logs along the Beetop–Roundtop Trail. After the first day of work\, we'll return to the trailhead to camp together. This stunning alpine trail stays high as it heads north toward Trestle Peak. Perched above Lake Pend Oreille\, it offers sweeping views of the mountains and valleys of northern Idaho\, northwest Montana\, and even British Columbia.  \nThis section of trail is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, and ITA is committed to maintaining portions of this iconic 1\,000-mile route each year.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Beetop-Roundtop Trail #120  \nItinerary: This is a two-day project. We'll begin work Saturday morning (volunteers welcome to camp overnight starting Friday)\, wrap up mid-day Sunday. The crew leader will specify the meeting time & place in their pre-trip emails.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Ken Dueis   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About an hour and 15 minutes from Clark Fork    \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile    \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– This trail gains a thousand feet of elevation over the first four miles. Hiking carrying day packs and tools\, limited water on the ridge so plan to carry sufficient water each day. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Saw work\, digging\, and swinging tools to clear any logs out of the trail and improve the trail tread to ensure proper width and slope. Carrying tools and day packs short distances. Volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace. SUMMARY:2026 Lochsa Peak
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Lochsa Peak  \nProject Dates:   June 5-7  \nVolunteers will spend the weekend working out of Wilderness Gateway\, just off winding Highway 12 and the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River. This is a popular access point to the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness\, and we'll work on the Lochsa Peak Trail. This section is part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, but instead of thru-hiking\, we'll enjoy the luxuries of camping in an established campsite.  \nWe'll begin at the Wilderness Gateway Trailhead and work up Lochsa Peak as far as we can. The trail travels through a beautiful\, shaded forest with a mix of switchbacks and long\, straight sections. While the climb is fairly steady\, it's mostly shaded. The area receives enough rainfall to support dense undergrowth and plenty of wildflowers where the forest opens up.  Occasional breaks in the trees offer sweeping views of the surrounding area!  \nCheck out this ITA Trail Spotlight about this trail!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Lochsa Peak Trail #220  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project.  Welcome to camp with the crew leader starting Friday night\, and car camping near the trailhead for the entirety of the project.  Working all day on Saturday. Wrapping up any work Sunday morning\, heading home early afternoon.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Closer to a 3.5 but rounded up as the trails get steep fast out of Wilderness Gateway! 2\,500 feet elevation gain over three miles.  Switchbacks\, with some longer straight sections to rest.  Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This trail gets some regular maintenance due to its proximity to a busy Wilderness access point\, so work will depend on conditions after the winter. Saw work and log out expected with some brushing\, some digging/swinging tools for tread work. SUMMARY:2026 Moose Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Moose Ridge  \nProject Dates:   June 13-19  \nA backcountry adventure in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness will bring the crew high above the Selway River to work on the Moose Ridge Trail\, one of the most remote sections of the Idaho Centennial Trail. We'll fly from McCall into Shearer\, a backcountry airstrip along the Selway River.  51 Ranch Outfitters will provide pack support to move gear up to a base camp. From here the crew will work on clearing the Moose Ridge Trail\, working north and south from base camp as time allows. Finally\, the crew will backpack back to the river\, before getting picked up and flown back to civilization on the last day!   \nThis section of the ICT may be some of the toughest for hikers to navigate on the whole 1000-mile trail because of downed trees and thick brush after 2017 wildfires burned much of the area. Opening this section is not just a benefit for long-distance hikers (who greatly appreciate our efforts)\, but these trails would be used by horse packers\, hunters\, and backpackers once clear! ITA\, the Forest Service\, and Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation have all put time into re-opening and maintaining this section of trail over the last several years.  This project immediately follows the ITA Ditch Creek project\, where that crew will help ensure the trail is open for us to get to camp! Between the two projects\, ITA will make a big impact on one of the most overgrown sections of the ICT!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Moose Ridge #562  \nItinerary: This is a Saturday to Friday weeklong project. Fly out of McCall early Saturday morning. Packed up to base camp for the week.  On Thursday\, backpack back to Shearer to prepare for a Friday morning flight back to McCall.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall\, Idaho  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nHike: 5/5 Very Strenuous – Pack supported up to camp\, about an 8-mile hike.  It climbs gradually for the first 5 miles along Ditch creek\, then switchbacks steeply up to the ridge for 1 mile. Finally\, the trail climbs along the ridge to base camp. Carrying day packs and some tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Lots of saw work\, brushing\, and some tread work\, working north and south as time/downed trees allow. SUMMARY:2026 Liz Butte
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Liz Butte  \nProject Dates:   July 6-11  \nIn the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest\, Liz Butte sits high above the Lochsa River\, between the Clearwater and Bitterroot Mountains. To get to this project\, volunteers will have a chance to explore the Lolo Trail Corridor\, which climbs from Highway 12 and follows ridgelines through old growth forest\, meadows\, and peaks. This corridor is made up of the Nee Me Poo National Historic Trail plus the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and is about 90 miles long spanning from the western end at Musselshell Meadows to Lolo Pass where it passes into Montana.     \nWith food and a volunteer cook provided\, we'll car camp together in the shade along the road just below the lookout. We'll be a short hike or drive to both the lookout and to the Liz Butte Trail.  There are lots of trees and saw work expected at the beginning where the trail passes through an old burn scar for the first two miles.  The second two miles switchbacks down to Weitas Creek out of the burned areas and will need more tread work and brushing!   \nPart of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.  Over the coming years we plan to build off this work and continue this section where it climbs out of the other side of Weitas Creek.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Liz Butte Trail # 649 and Yokum Creek Trail #650  \nItinerary: This is a Monday to Saturday 6 day project. Meet at Liz Butte Monday afternoon to set up camp. Work Tuesday – Friday.  Saturday morning\, clean up camp and head home.    \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 3 hours from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 4.3 miles and 2600 feet of elevation loss from the top down to Weitas Creek and depending on trail conditions\, the crew could expect to clear up to this far. The first 1.8 miles are less steep through the burned area\, and the next section is shaded in thicker forest as it switchbacks down to the creek. Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile. \nProject Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2011\, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed. SUMMARY:2026 Pend Oreille Divide
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Pend Oreille Divide  \nProject Dates:  July 17-19  \nAfter a scenic drive to Lunch Peak Lookout\, we'll begin a three-day backpacking project on the Pend Oreille Divide Trail. Idaho Trails Association has been steadily improving this trail for several years\, working from both the north and south ends. On this trip\, we'll hike to Pend Oreille Peak and continue trail work from there\, focusing on the four-mile middle section that connects our previous efforts and creates a more continuous\, accessible route.  \nFrom there\, the trail follows a high ridge with stunning views in every direction. We'll wind past several peaks—including Mount Pend Oreille—while taking in sweeping panoramas of the Purcell and Selkirk Mountains. This stretch is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, a 1\,000-mile route that ITA proudly helps maintain each year. Join us for a rewarding weekend of trail work in a spectacular alpine setting.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Pend Oreille Divide #67  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. We will have a camp Thursday night at the trailhead\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Beginning Friday morning for a day of trail work backpacking as we go\, camping nearby. Finishing Sunday afternoon.    \nFood Provided by ITA: No  \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Sandpoint    \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Distance will depend on the work we find\, up to eight miles. The trail stays on the ridge\, with net gain and loss of less than 1\,000 feet. Volunteers carrying their personal food and gear.    \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Work will mostly involve cutting trees and brush off the trail. Repeated digging or sawing. Carrying tools and days packs. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. SUMMARY:2026 Windy Bill
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Windy Bill  \nProject Dates:   August 9-15  \nIn partnership with the Great Burn Conservation Alliance (GBCA)\, volunteers will gather for a week of trail work near the Proposed Great Burn Wilderness.  We'll work on the Scurvy Mountain Trail and the Windy Bill Trail. This section is part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, and ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.  \nWe'll have all our gear packed into a base camp below Scurvy Mountain Lookout\, with wonderful views overlooking the Moose Mountains\, Cayuse and Kelly Creek drainages and Scurvy Lake. This trail gets regularly logged out but has deep ruts and trenches that need to be addressed. The crew can work to fill in the lost tread and install water bars to help prevent further erosion. This multi-use trail gets heavy use from people accessing the lookout.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Windy Bill Trail # 351 and Scurvy Mountain Trail #524  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Welcome to camp the night before and meet Kelly Creek Trailhead to carpool the last few miles on Sunday morning. When at the trailhead\, drop gear with packers and hike into camp. Work Monday-Friday\, returning to base camp each day. On Saturday morning\, the packer returns to bring the gear back to the trailhead.      \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List:Gear Checklist for Packed Supported Projects\, Food Provided  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 2.5 -3 hours from Pierce\, Idaho  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile for the Hike into Camp and the Hike for Work   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous –   Three miles with 1\,800 feet of elevation gain for an uphill but reasonable hike to get to camp\, some big switchbacks to get up to the ridge\, where it evens out. More strenuous is the hike to the trail work from camp; it's a steep climb back down the hill to the lower ridge\, but the views from camp are worth the climb! See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Work will include some tread work\, installing waterbars \, and improving switchbacks with increasing climbs to work each day. Swinging tools\, digging and moving dirt\, lifting materials.  Potential for brushing or log out. SUMMARY:2026 Upper Priest River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Upper Priest River  \nProject Dates: August 28-30   \nJust south of the Canadian border\, this trail system begins in one of the largest remaining tracts of intact old-growth forest in the Pacific Northwest. During this three-day project\, we’ll hike the Continental Trail to reach the Upper Priest River Trail\, where we’ll focus on repairing and improving several backcountry puncheons.  \nWe are actively looking for someone with building experience to advise the building portion of the project. Please contact us if you or anyone you know may be interested at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.  \nThis project\, we will be working in partnership with the Backcountry Horsemen of Priest River\, helping to strengthen and restore these essential structures\, which provide safe passage for hikers and stock users. Our work will include dismantling worn sections\, installing new materials\, and replacing some puncheons entirely\, while improving the surrounding tread to ensure the puncheons remain durable and sustainable for years to come.  \nMore Information can be found on  All Trails   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrail: Upper Priest River Trail #308\, Continental Trail #28  \nItinerary: This is a three-day project. Arrive at the Upper Priest River trailhead on Thursday evening if possible. The crew will begin working on Friday morning. We will finish on Sunday afternoon.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Melodie Viafranco  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 2 hours from Sandpoint\, Idaho   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike 2/5 Moderately Strenuous– Upper Priest River Trail climbs steadily uphill\, gaining 1\,000 feet of elevation in 7 miles. Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Repeated digging or sawing\, the potential for some heavy lifting. Carrying tools and day packs up to five miles each day.  Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.
