SUMMARY:2026 Selway River South
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Selway River South  \nProject Dates: June 10-14  \nCome enjoy a backcountry adventure along the headwaters of the Selway River! Starting at the Historic Magruder Ranger Station\, we'll backpack south from here\, cutting out logs as we go in a "cut and run" style project. This means more emphasis on log out and opening the trail as far as possible vs focusing on brushing and tread work. This trail is an important access point to the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, popular with day hikers and backpackers exploring the Magruder Corridor and an important connecting trail for hunters and outfitters.  \nOn the first night\, we will backpack to Upper Crossing (about 5 miles in) and as work allows bump camp further during the week. There are some great backcountry campsites all along the headwaters of the Wild and Scenic Selway River\, with a chance to cover up to 12 miles. The goal is to cover as much trail as possible during this project.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Selway River Trail #4   \nItinerary: This is a five-day project. Meeting at the trailhead on the morning of June 10th\, ready to backpack. Bumping camp each night as work allows. On the 14th\, packing up and hiking back to the trailhead to head home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Alex Cravener  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 45 min from Darby\, Montana  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – The Selway River gains 2\,500 feet of elevation over 8 miles; but with a gentle slope and following the creek the whole time. Carrying all personal gear and tool in backpacks with no pack support. Downhill on the hike out on the last day! See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – All crosscut and saw work to remove logs from the trail. Carrying backpacks to bump camp while we work. \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! SUMMARY:2026 Trapper Creek - Youth
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Trapper Creek – Youth \nDates: June 11 – June 14 \nITA’s Youth Trail Crew Program provides opportunities for youth ages 14-18 to learn about the outdoors while building and maintaining hiking trails in a safe\, teamwork-oriented environment. \nThis four-day project will be ITA’s only boat-in youth project in north Idaho. Participants will travel by boat to Trapper Creek Campsite on the northeast end of Upper Priest Lake and camp right along the shoreline. The campsite offers beautiful lake views\, a sandy beach\, and opportunities for swimming and fishing after workdays. From camp\, the crew will work on a three-mile section of trail heading north toward the road on a route that has not been maintained in some time and will likely require extensive brushing. \nThe Trapper Creek Trail is an important connector that completes a full loop around Upper Priest Lake by linking to the Navigation Trail. It is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail (ICT)\, a nearly 1\,000-mile route spanning the state that ITA helps maintain. Throughout the weekend\, youth will focus on brushing\, cutting logs\, and general trail clearing while learning safe tool use\, teamwork\, and trail work fundamentals. Crew members will also share responsibility for camp life and practice Leave No Trace principles while enjoying a remote\, wilderness-style camping experience. \nITA’s youth projects are completely free for volunteers to join\, and all food is provided. Gear can be borrowed from ITA if needed with advance notice\, or youth may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund. \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions. \nTrails: Upper Priest Lake Trail #302 \nItinerary: This is a four-day project. Volunteers and a parent/guardian will join a pre-trip Zoom meeting before the project. Meet Thursday afternoon at the Lionhead Campground in Priest Lake State Park to boat into the project site. Friday and Saturday will be full workdays. Sunday\, break down camp\, boat out\, and be ready for pick up at Lionhead Campground in the early afternoon. \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes – Cook \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects \nCrew Leaders: Taylor Mailly and Miles Butler \nEstimated Hike Time from Trailhead to Camp: Short boat ride\, camping on Priest Lake \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile \nYouth Trip Selection: \nYouth trip sign-ups will be open until March 22nd. Although early sign-ups will be prioritized\, ITA leadership and staff may adjust the final crews to maximize trip experience and provide opportunities for the greatest number of youth participants. To help facilitate trip assignments\, please sign up for your preferred trip and include alternate trips you could participate in\, should the preferred trip not be available. You will receive notification of trip assignment via email prior to March 31st. \nDifficulty Rating: \nHike: 3/5 Moderate – Backpacking several miles into and out of backcountry camp with day packs and trail tools. Elevation gain is moderate. \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Focus on log out\, brushing\, light tread work\, and clearing/scouting trail. \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! SUMMARY:2026 Moose Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Moose Ridge  \nProject Dates:   June 13-19  \nA backcountry adventure in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness will bring the crew high above the Selway River to work on the Moose Ridge Trail\, one of the most remote sections of the Idaho Centennial Trail. We'll fly from McCall into Shearer\, a backcountry airstrip along the Selway River.  51 Ranch Outfitters will provide pack support to move gear up to a base camp. From here the crew will work on clearing the Moose Ridge Trail\, working north and south from base camp as time allows. Finally\, the crew will backpack back to the river\, before getting picked up and flown back to civilization on the last day!   \nThis section of the ICT may be some of the toughest for hikers to navigate on the whole 1000-mile trail because of downed trees and thick brush after 2017 wildfires burned much of the area. Opening this section is not just a benefit for long-distance hikers (who greatly appreciate our efforts)\, but these trails would be used by horse packers\, hunters\, and backpackers once clear! ITA\, the Forest Service\, and Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation have all put time into re-opening and maintaining this section of trail over the last several years.  This project immediately follows the ITA Ditch Creek project\, where that crew will help ensure the trail is open for us to get to camp! Between the two projects\, ITA will make a big impact on one of the most overgrown sections of the ICT!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Moose Ridge #562  \nItinerary: This is a Saturday to Friday weeklong project. Fly out of McCall early Saturday morning. Packed up to base camp for the week.  On Thursday\, backpack back to Shearer to prepare for a Friday morning flight back to McCall.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall\, Idaho  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. SUMMARY:2026 Queens - Youth
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Queens River – Youth  \nDates: June 17 – 21   \nITA's Youth Trail Crew Program provides opportunities for youth ages 14-18 to learn about the outdoors while building and maintaining hiking trails in a safe\, teamwork-oriented environment.  \nThis season in the Sawtooth Wilderness\, ITA will host a youth trail work project focused on improving access along the Little Queens and Queens River Trails. The crew will be based at the Queens River Trailhead\, camping beneath rugged granite peaks and dense forest\, with the river close by and sweeping Sawtooth views in every direction. Each day\, participants will head out to work on trail and return to camp in the evenings to relax\, share meals\, and take in one of Idaho's most scenic and remote landscapes.  \nTrail work will primarily involve cutting out downed logs and restoring passability along these routes- work that is both physically demanding and deeply rewarding. There is always more to clear in this area\, and the crew will contribute to a multi-year effort to reopen the full Queens River loop\, with additional ITA crews continuing later in the season. With guidance from crew leaders\, youth will also take part in daily camp life\, including meal setup and cleanup\, supporting the volunteer cook\, managing water and sanitation\, and accounting for tools. Volunteers will learn and follow Leave No Trace principles and project safety expectations while building practical skills\, teamwork\, and confidence in a true wilderness setting.   \nITA's youth projects are completely free for volunteers to join\, and all food is provided. Gear can be borrowed from ITA if needed with advance notice\, or youth may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.   \nProject information is subject to change. SUMMARY:2026 Thompson Pass
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Thompson Pass  \nProject Dates:  June 20-21 \nJoin us for a weekend trail restoration project on the historic Raven Gulch and Barton Creek trails in the Coeur d'Alene Ranger District near Thompson Pass\, on the Idaho–Montana border. These trails were identified by crew leaders as long-forgotten routes that have not received Forest Service maintenance in many years. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)\, they represent an important piece of trail history and craftsmanship that deserves to be preserved.  \nVolunteers will spend the weekend clearing brush\, removing fallen trees\, and restoring sections of trail corridor to help reclaim these historic paths before they are lost to time. We'll be car camping at the trailhead\, enjoying the surrounding wilderness while connecting with fellow trail stewards. This project is a unique opportunity to explore a rarely visited area\, learn about the legacy of CCC trail building\, and play a direct role in protecting an important part of our public lands heritage. No prior trail experience is necessary — all tools and instruction will be provided\, and volunteers of all skill levels are welcome.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Raven Gulch #142 and Barton Creek #140  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. Meeting Saturday morning for a day of trail work\, camping nearby. Finishing Sunday afternoon.    \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Tony Berns  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 50 minutes from Wallace  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile for Barton Creek and Raven Gulch  \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous– Both trails are uphill and climb almost 1\,000 feet per mile\, but there is so much to do on the trail that we will be mostly working slowly up the climbs\, so we won't be gaining elevation too quickly. Volunteers will be hiking carrying day packs and tools.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous– Variety of project work including cutting logs\, brushing\, and digging tread. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! SUMMARY:2026 Liz Butte
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Liz Butte  \nProject Dates:   July 6-11  \nIn the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest\, Liz Butte sits high above the Lochsa River\, between the Clearwater and Bitterroot Mountains. To get to this project\, volunteers will have a chance to explore the Lolo Trail Corridor\, which climbs from Highway 12 and follows ridgelines through old growth forest\, meadows\, and peaks. This corridor is made up of the Nee Me Poo National Historic Trail plus the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and is about 90 miles long spanning from the western end at Musselshell Meadows to Lolo Pass where it passes into Montana.     \nWith food and a volunteer cook provided\, we'll car camp together in the shade along the road just below the lookout. We'll be a short hike or drive to both the lookout and to the Liz Butte Trail.  There are lots of trees and saw work expected at the beginning where the trail passes through an old burn scar for the first two miles.  The second two miles switchbacks down to Weitas Creek out of the burned areas and will need more tread work and brushing!   \nPart of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.  Over the coming years we plan to build off this work and continue this section where it climbs out of the other side of Weitas Creek.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Liz Butte Trail # 649 and Yokum Creek Trail #650  \nItinerary: This is a Monday to Saturday 6 day project. Meet at Liz Butte Monday afternoon to set up camp. Work Tuesday – Friday.  Saturday morning\, clean up camp and head home.    \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 3 hours from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 4.3 miles and 2600 feet of elevation loss from the top down to Weitas Creek and depending on trail conditions\, the crew could expect to clear up to this far. The first 1.8 miles are less steep through the burned area\, and the next section is shaded in thicker forest as it switchbacks down to the creek. Carrying day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile. \nProject Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2011\, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed.     \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! The trailhead begins directly from camp\, allowing the crew to work straight from camp each day. Volunteers will work up the Needles Summit Trail as it climbs steadily toward a high ridge\, passing White Rock and Stump Lake on the way to Needles Summit. While the first mile and a half of trail receives more regular maintenance\, beyond the trail junction the crew can expect more engaging work\, including crosscut sawing and brushing in less-maintained sections.  \nThroughout the project\, participants will focus on trail maintenance tasks such as brushing\, saw work\, and improving trail tread. Crew members will also share responsibility for camp life\, including setting up camp\, maintaining clean and organized common areas\, managing tools\, and following Leave No Trace principles. Youth will build teamwork\, communication\, and leadership skills while practicing trail safety and learning what it takes to care for public lands. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See ourFAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Needles Summit Trail #101  \nItinerary: This is a three-day weekend project. Meet Friday afternoon to set up camp\, review trail work basics\, and go over safety expectations. Saturday will be a full day of trailwork. On Sunday\, the crew will wrap up work in the morning\, clean up camp\, and head home.   \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes – Cook  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided   \nCrew Leader: Tom Crawford and Brenda Magnuson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from McCall  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile  \nYouth Trip Selection:   \nYouth trip sign-ups will be open until March 22nd. SUMMARY:2026 Indian Creek - Youth
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Indian Creek – Youth   \nDates: July 12 – 18   \nITA's Youth Trail Crew Program provides opportunities for youth ages 14-18 to learn about the outdoors while building and maintaining hiking trails in a safe\, teamwork-oriented environment.  \nThis fly-in youth project offers a rare opportunity to experience Idaho's backcountry from the air while contributing to meaningful trail stewardship along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Youth crew members will spend a week living and working in the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness\, focusing on reopening sections of the Indian Creek Trail. The trail follows Indian Creek through open meadows and past natural hot springs\, tucked beneath the rugged peaks of the Salmon River Mountains. This corridor is an important access route for wilderness users exploring the Middle Fork and surrounding backcountry.  \nThe crew will depart from McCall and fly into the Indian Creek backcountry airstrip\, then hike to a base camp near the river. Each day\, participants will work up the Indian Creek Trail clearing brush and removing downed trees using hand tools\, including crosscut saws. Conditions vary year to year\, but youth should expect physical work and increasing trail challenges the farther the crew travels from camp. Fly-in projects are limited\, and priority is given to ITA Youth Program alumni. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See ourFAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Indian Creek Trail #225  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Volunteers and a parent/guardian will join a pre-trip Zoom meeting before the project. On Sunday\, fly out of McCall and set up camp along the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Work all week\, starting up Indian Creek and then continuing based on water crossings. On Saturday morning\, fly back to McCall forpick up.   \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes – Backpacking   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Jess Evett and James Grantham  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile  \nYouth Trip Selection:   \nYouth trip sign-ups will be open until March 22nd. \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous- The trail closely follows Indian Creek and is generally an easy grade with rolling ups and downs typical of a river corridor\, but little overall elevation gain. Youth should be prepared for multiple creek crossings\, including feeder streams that may require taking boots off depending on water levels.   \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous– Trail work will focus heavily on brushing to clear overgrown sections\, with some crosscut saw work to remove downed trees. The crew will also address drainage issues as needed to help protect the trail corridor. Participants should expect physically demanding days\, teamwork\, and hands-on skill building in a remote wilderness setting.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! SUMMARY:2026 Bean Bacon Trailblazers
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Bean Bacon Trailblazers  \nProject Dates: July 19 – 25  \nThis weeklong project will work on the Bean-Bacon loop\, a spectacular backcountry route in the Bitterroot Mountains that winds through old-growth forest\, high ridge lines\, meadows\, alpine lakes\, and along the Wild & Scenic St. Joe River.  \nOver the course of the week\, we'll work on this beautiful wilderness loop to finish clearing downed logs\, brushing\, and restoring tread so the trail remains accessible and enjoyable for hikers and backpackers. The Bean-Bacon loop is known for its scenic variety — towering pines\, mossy streams\, mountain views\, and open meadows — making this an unforgettable place to work and explore.  \nWe'll be packed into our backcountry base camp by mules to a camp on the St. Joe River\, where a camp cook will provide meals for the week. From camp\, we'll organize into work groups each day to tackle remaining maintenance needs. Expect hands-on trail maintenance — no specialized experience is required\, and tools and guidance will be provided — along with plenty of time to enjoy the setting and camaraderie of a multi-day trail crew.  \nThis is a unique opportunity to experience a supported wilderness camp and help steward a stunning backcountry trail alongside fellow volunteers.  \nMore Information: All Trails for the Bean Bacon Loop   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrail: Bean Bacon #66  \nItinerary: Arrive at Spruce Tree Campground Saturday afternoon/evening. Meet packer Sunday morning to hike into base camp; the packer will pack gear. Work Monday-Friday with a day off mid-week to relax\, fish\, and explore. Saturday morning\, the packer will return to bring gear back to the trailhead. There is a potential to move camp mid-week\, depending on project work. Crew leader will specify the meeting time & place in their pre-trip emails.  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Packed Supported Projects\, Food Provided  \nCrew Leader: Don McIntosh  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1.5 hours from Avery\, Idaho   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have some experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous –  The hike to camp from the trailhead is about 5.6 miles\, slight uphill on the way in with several gains and losses of elevation totaling 2\,500 feet. We will take Line Creek/Broken Leg trail to our camp. Once at camp\, we'll make day trips out to the trail work\, with the hike getting longer each day as we work further from camp. Bacon Loop Trail  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Repeated digging or sawing\, the potential for some heavy lifting. Carrying tools and packs up to five miles each day. SUMMARY:2026 Seven Devils - Horse Heaven
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Seven Devils – Horse Heaven \nProject Dates: July 19-25 \n Horse Heaven sits at 8200' in elevation\, high between the northern and southern Seven Devils Mountains\, with stunning views of each. Here on the grassy hill is where we'll base camp for a week of trail work. From camp\, the crew will head south to clear towards Ruth Lake. This trip will offer big views of the Seven Devils\, Hells Canyon\, and Rapid River drainage with its rugged\, steep terrain.  \nIt's a long hike to get here\, but we will have pack support to bring in most of our gear\, carrying only day packs and some tools. Steep climbs are rewarded with panoramic views\, and we might even see a few mountain goats! ITA has worked in the Seven Devils for many years\, but this remote section gets less love than other places. ITA has two weeklong projects this year to focus on the southern side\, and these trails are just as stunning as those on the iconic Seven Devils Loop trail!   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Black Lake-Horse Heaven Trail #214\, Carbonate Hill Trail # 189   \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Meeting at the Trailhead Saturday night for an early pack in on Sunday. Sunday– hike/pack into the base camp. Work clearing trail Monday-Friday. On Saturday\, pack stock returns to bring gear back to the trailhead by midafternoon; camp over night at the trailhead or head home.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support  \nCrew Leader: Alex Cravener and Chris Keilty    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1.5 hours from Riggins  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile for Windy Saddle to Horse Heaven and from Horse Heaven to Ruth Lake   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Some heavy lifting or digging. All trail work will be a short but potentially steep hike from camp\, as the trails all drop in elevation after Horse Heaven. Working up to 3.5 miles away from base camp.   \nVolunteer Spots Available: 100 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign UpOops! SUMMARY:2026 Porcupine Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Porcupine Meadow  \nProject Dates:   July 22-26  \nVolunteers will explore the meadows and ridgelines on the southern end of the Gospel Hump Wilderness on this backpacking project! Great views of the Gospel Hump begin on the drive to camp\, as the trailhead is off the 444 road.  This recently improved road is a main access corridor into the Gospel Hump Wilderness. With access to alpine lakes\, mountain peaks (including Gospel Peak (8156') for which this wilderness is named) ending at Square Mountain Lookout\, it's worth taking time to enjoy the drive in!  \nFrom Moores Campground we'll backpack 7 miles into our base camp. The first two miles descend from the trailhead to Anchor Creek. The next 2.5 miles the trail climbs up to Plummer Point\, where it levels out and follows the ridge for the last 2.5 miles to camp. Under Marble and Ace Buttes\, we'll camp near Porcupine Meadows. We'll work as far down Moores Trail as we can over the course of the project\, cutting out logs\, cutting back brush\, and improving tread as needed.  This trail eventually connects to the Salmon River\, and ITA has worked on several of these southern trails over the year\, including Johnson Saddle and Sheep Creek.    \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Hump Trail #313 and Moores Trail #312  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project.  Great car camping at the trailhead for folks to come out the night before. Meeting at the trailhead on Wednesday morning ready to backpack into Porcupine Meadows. Base camp here\, working up and down the trail each day.  Sunday\, packing up camp and hiking back to the trailhead to head home!    \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Pam Bond and Dave Beck    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 40 min to Grangeville   \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project.
