With full access to the cabin and space for outdoor camping\, volunteers can enjoy a comfortable basecamp surrounded by towering trees and peaceful woodland.   \nFrom Magee Cabin\, we'll split our efforts between Halsey Creek Trail and Little Elk Trail\, tackling tasks such as clearing brush\, removing fallen logs\, and improving trail tread to keep the trails safe and accessible. These trails wind through beautiful\, forested terrain\, providing important access to the surrounding backcountry for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.  \nThis project is a great opportunity for volunteers of all experience levels to gain hands-on trail maintenance skills\, work as part of a team\, and make a meaningful impact on the trails and environment. From Poverty Flat Campground\, we will have pack support to bring our gear in and out of a base camp and from here work each day up and down the trail. Surrounded by jagged ridges between Blackmare\, White Rock\, and Square Top peaks\, this trail leads to Blackmare Lake\, about 2.5 miles from camp. Depending on work\, we may bump camp to the lake later in the week!  \nThe trail was cleared of trees the last few years by ITA and other groups\, but more downfall is expected\, and there are several sections left to brush. Work will also be needed to restore areas of tread and drainage along the trail. This will be year four of ITAs progress to help open this trail with support from Idaho Fish and Game. Starting at Windy Saddle Trailhead high in the Seven Devils\, the crew will descend an incredible 6300 feet in elevation all the way to the Snake River in Hells Canyon. From here\, a jet boat will take us to Pittsburg Landing\, and we'll shuttle all back to vehicles and head home.   \nThe trail follows the East Fork of Sheep Creek at its origins just under the saddle\, taking a detour along the canyon walls and into the Lightning Creek draining\, before joining back up with Sheep Creek and following it all the way to the Snake River. Volunteers will backpack and work down\, bumping camp along as they go. There are some great camps along the route\, and this trail is used by hunters\, backpackers\, and people day hiking from the top down or bottom up! This is a great opportunity to experience all the Hells Canyon Wilderness has to offer\, top to bottom!   \nCheck out this ITA Trail Spotlight for Sheep Creek!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Check back then to sign up!*** \nProject Name:  Elkhorn Yurt  \nProject Dates:  September 18-20  \nThis is the fourth year that ITA and Idaho Parks and Recreation have partnered to help clear and open trails in the Idaho City Yurt trail system!  After big windstorms over the winter\, there are more down trees than typical\, so lots of fun crosscut work is expected! This area is known for its scenic views and wide variety of recreational activities all year long. We'll spend a weekend working mostly on clearing logs and brushing with potential for some tread repair and replacing trail signs. In the evening\, volunteers have been invited to stay at the Elkhorn Yurt and take advantage of its kitchen\, fire pit\, and outhouse.  The Yurt sleeps six\, with lots of tent spots around too. This trail follows the river for 15 miles\, ending at Clear Creek Summit and is enjoyed by hikers\, backpackers\, and hot springs enthusiasts. Quick action is needed to stabilize the trail and keep it open in the areas that burned\, and annual maintenance and log out is needed in the areas that did not. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together\, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance\, and make a lasting impact on Idaho's public lands.  \nThis is the fourth year that ITA and Idaho Parks and Recreation have partnered to help clear and open trails in the Idaho City Yurt trail system!  After big windstorms over the winter\, there are more down trees than typical\, so lots of fun crosscut work is expected! This area is known for its scenic views and wide variety of recreational activities all year long. We'll spend a weekend working mostly on clearing logs and brushing with potential for some tread repair and replacing trail signs. In the evening\, volunteers have been invited to stay at the brand new Petersen Yurt and take advantage of its kitchen\, fire pit\, and outhouse. This trail follows the creek through meadows and hot springs and sits below several peaks of the Salmon River Mountains. These trails are used by hunters\, boaters\, horse packers\, and backpackers wanting to explore the Middle Fork of the Salmon and the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. An ITA crew will be here earlier in the year to address the first few miles\, and we’ll continue where they left off and push further into the wilderness! \nWe’ll will fly into the Indian Creek backcountry airstrip along the Middle Fork. From here pack support is tentatively available to bring us further up trail\, to a base camp about 3.5 miles up the trail near the Middle Fork of Indian Creek. In years past\, the trail was passable but very brushy\, and the further up trail the more crosscut work is to be done! At the end of the week\, we’ll backpack down to the Middle Fork for our flights back to civilization. \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Sunday\, fly out and hike up to base camp along Indian Creek. We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho.
