SUMMARY:2026 Rapid River - Frank Church
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Rapid River – Frank Church  \nProject Dates: July 26 – August 1  \nThere is a lesser-known\, but equally impressive\, Rapid River that runs through the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Starting near Seafoam Guard Station\, it cuts through a rugged canyon and ends at the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Volunteers will car camp for a week in this beautiful remote section of the Salmon Challis National Forest and work on the Rapid River Trail.   \nWe'll car camp together in an aspen grove\, near the Seafoam Guard Station\, and carpool the last new miles up to the trailhead. The trail starts at the end of the road\, and volunteers will begin each day with a river crossing. After this\, the trail stays up along the canyon wall and follows along the dramatic river canyon overlooking Rapid River. The trail alternates through forested areas\, talus slopes\, and through several side creeks. We'll work on log out\, with some potential tread work and brushing.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.   \nTrails: Rapid River Trail #4007  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Sunday\, meeting in the afternoon to set up camp. Project work Monday-Friday\, with a day off as needed to relax or explore. Saturday\, wrap up any work\, pack up camp\, and head home!  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 30 minutes from Stanley   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Rapid River Trail has some ups and downs but generally maintains elevation along the side of the canyon. Hiking with day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Lots of saw work\, brushing\, and some tread work.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 96 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. SUMMARY:2026 Little Queens River - Women in the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Little Queens River – Women in the Wild  \nProject Dates: July 29 – August 2  \nITA's Women in the Wild trail projects are designed to create a supportive\, empowering\, and fun environment where women can learn new skills\, build confidence\, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together\, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance\, and make a lasting impact on Idaho's public lands.  \nITA volunteers will continue to chip away at clearing the Queens River loop as part of a long-term effort by the Forest Service\, ITA\, Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation and the Pulaski Users Group. Continuing our efforts over the last few years\, we will start on the Little Queens River side\, backpacking and moving camp up as we work up the trail. This beautiful loop\, on the less traveled side of the Sawtooth Wilderness\, is a gem. Large sections have been logged out in the last few years\, but the 2013 fire through here means no shortage of trees continue to fall. Back-to-back ITA crews will clear logs and cut back brush where it obscures the trail.   \nStarting from the Queens River Trailhead near Atlanta\, Idaho\, we'll backpack into camp at the junction of the Scenic Lake Trail. Depending on trail conditions\, we may stay here for the duration or bump camp further up once during the project. On the last day\, we'll hike out and swap out camp with the second backpacking crew coming in after us!  \nMore info on All Trails (for the whole loop)  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Little Queens River Trail #7454  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project\, beginning with our backpack into camp Wednesday morning. Welcome to car camp at the trailhead the evening before. Working Wednesday – Saturday\, maybe moving camp further up as work allows. Sunday hiking back to the trailhead and heading home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Kirsten Severud and Cindy Walker   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 3 hours from Idaho City  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 6 miles into camp\, 1500 feet of elevation gain for gentle but still an uphill climb. Carrying all personal gear and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Lots of saw work\, brushing\, and potentially some digging some tread work. Volunteers can choose trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.   \nVolunteer Spots Available: 96 of 100\nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. SUMMARY:2026 Wilderness Immersion Cold Meadows - Application Page
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Frank Church Wilderness Immersion – Application  \nTwo open spots still!   \nBecause of the unique nature of this long project and the remote location\, we ask interested volunteers to fill out an application. You must read the entire project and difficulty description before applying.   \nThis fly-in project will drop volunteers deep in the backcountry for an extended project working on trails in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Starting from Cold Meadows backcountry airstrip\, we'll work on clearing up the Cottonwood Creek Trail. We'll work on a reroute in one of the meadows the trail passes through\, around a section flooded by beavers\, started last year. The crew will also work on clearing the trail toward Black Lake and beyond\, with potential to bump camp along as work allows.   \nThe Cottonwood Creek Trail connects with several other trails to form trail loops through meadows\, up and over ridges\, and past several peaks and lakes. ITA has been working on clearing trails in this area for many years now\, with no shortage of downfall each year. This is a great opportunityto work in a very remote area of the Frank Church and help preserve a remote trail system.   \nITA is partnering with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Wilderness Foundation\, who will also have a crew out for the duration. We'll camp separately and be working on different sections of trail but there may be opportunity for some inter-crew socialization and support on the project work. Having these projects at the same time allows us to maximize pack support opportunities for both crews in this very remote area!  \nFlying in and out of Cascade\, we'll have pack support available to bring some of our camping gear\, food\, and tools into a base camp near the confluence of Farrow and Cottonwood Creek\, about 6 miles of easy hiking. Halfway through\, a food resupply will be flown into the airstrip\, and the crew will hike back to get it. At the end of the project\, pack support returns to bring gear back to the airstrip for a flight back home early the last day. As the crew progresses further\, we may decide it's best to move our camp closer to work; pack support is not available to bump camp\, so this will be backpacking.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Cottonwood Creek Trail #41\, Black Lake Trail # 238  \nItinerary: This is a 15-day project. Volunteers will join a pre-trip Zoom meeting/planning session in the months prior to the trip. Pack support in and out of a backcountry camp\, with a self-supported backpacking trip further up the trail as work allows.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: More information about planning extended backcountry trips will be available to the crew Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Glenn Florence and Michelle Florence   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying from Cascade  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50 - Due if selected as a volunteer   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. \n Difficulty Rating  \nThe difficulty on the project is not so much the distance or work\, but the duration of the experience! You do not have to be an expert thru hiker or seasoned trail crew veteran to join\, but you must be willing to participate in the pre-trip preparation to ensure your success and safety.   \nExperience with backpacking and being in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear is mandatory for this project. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. It is expected that volunteers will begin training for this project upon acceptance.   \nYou will be asked to prepare fifteen days' worth of backcountry meals prior to leaving. Crew leaders can help advise during the pre-trip meetings\, but ultimately you are responsible for your food.  \nIf having the right gear to be safe and comfortable is a limiting factor\, volunteers may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.  \nYou will be spending fifteen days with no access to any normal comforts\, no hot showers or bathrooms\, sleeping on the ground\, rain or shine\, etc. It will be awesome and life-changing!  \nYou will be out of direct contact with friends and family for fifteen days. In an emergency\, either at home or in the field\, there is no quick way to return to civilization. In the event of an emergency\, crew leaders will have satellite messengers to coordinate evacuation if necessary.  \nFlexibility is also very important\, as trail projects of this length rarely go perfectly according to Plan A. You will be expected to work together as a crew and\, if necessary\, through InReach contact with the Forest Service and ITA staff\, to help brainstorm solutions and overcome obstacles as a team.   \nReading all required information\, communicating with your crew leaders\, and arriving at the project 100% prepared is crucial to this project. Crew leaders reserve the right to ask you not to participate at the trailhead if they feel you show up unprepared (for example\, brand new boots out of the box not broken in or arriving with not enough food).  \nYou must be ready and willing to commit to the entire 15 days. Having folks bail right before the trip or after just a few days dramatically and unfairly impacts the rest of the crew.   \nGet a bonus point for reading by putting "I promise I read the description!" in the first section of your application. I know it's a lot of information\, but we want folks to take the risks of an extended trip seriously!  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Six miles from the airstrip to the base camp. Downhill into camp. Past camp\, the hike gets more strenuous as the trail climbs up and over the ridge above Black Lake. See the linked map for the elevation profile. \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Improving tread\, and creek crossings when needed. Repeated digging and swinging tools.  \nVolunteer Spots: 8 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Project Sign-Up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Please submit one form for each person in your group. Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian. Before you sign up\, please be sure you can attend. It is tough on our crew leaders when volunteers don't show up or cancel right before the project. This field is hidden when viewing the formProjectParticipant InformationName*\n SUMMARY:2026 Slate Lake - Youth
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Slate Lake – Youth  \nDates: July 30 – August 2  \nITA's Youth Trail Crew Program provides opportunities for youth ages 14-18 to learn about the outdoors while building and maintaining hiking trails in a safe\, teamwork-oriented environment.  \nThis four-day youth trail project will be based out of a car camp at the Slate Lake trailhead in the Gospel Hump Wilderness\, offering expansive views into one of Idaho's most rugged and remote landscapes. Camping right at the trailhead allows the crew to work directly from camp each day\, focusing on trail maintenance along a popular route known for its excellent fishing opportunities and steady visitor use. With the 444 Road graded last summer\, the drive in from Grangeville is straightforward\, making access easy while still feeling truly backcountry. The project will emphasize crosscut saw work\, with plenty of opportunities to remove downed logs and keep this well-loved trail open and passable.  \nThroughout the project\, participants will focus on hands-on trail maintenance tasks such as crosscut sawing\, brushing\, and improving trail tread\, while also sharing responsibility for camp life. Youth will help with setting up and maintaining camp\, managing tools\, keeping common areas clean\, and following Leave No Trace principles.   \nITA's youth projects are completely free for volunteers to join\, and all food is provided. Gear can be borrowed from ITA if needed with advance notice\, or youth may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See ourFAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Hump Trail #313  \nItinerary: This is a four-day project. The crew will meet Thursday afternoon to set up and go over trail and project safety. On Friday and Saturday\, participants will work along the Slate Lake Trail\, focusing on trail maintenance tasks and returning to camp each evening. On Sunday\, the crew will break down and clean up camp before waiting to be picked up that afternoon.   \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes – Cook   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided   \nCrew Leader: Val Armichardy and James Grantham   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 2 hours from Grangeville  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile  \nYouth Trip Selection:   \nYouth trip sign-ups will be open until March 22nd. Although early sign-ups will be prioritized\, ITA leadership and staff may adjust the final crews to maximize trip experience and provide opportunities for the greatest number of youth participants. To help facilitate trip assignments\, please sign up for your preferred trip and include alternate trips you could participate in\, should the preferred trip not be available. You will receive notification of trip assignment via email prior to March 31st.  \nDifficulty Rating:  \nHike: 2/5 Easy to Moderate – This project is car-camp based\, with daily hikes from camp to the work site. The trail follows gentle creek corridors and forested slopes with minimal elevation gain. Participants should be prepared for uneven terrain while carrying day packs\, water\, and basic tools.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderate – The work will focus on crosscut saw work\, brushing\, and trail tread improvement\, including removing downed logs and clearing rocks or debris. While physically engaging\, the tasks are manageable for motivated youth and provide a good introduction to backcountry trail maintenance. SUMMARY:2026 20 Mile Lakes - Women in the Wild - Backpacking 101
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: 20 Mile Lakes – Backpacking 101  \nProject Dates: July 31 – August 2  \nITA's Women in the Wild trail projects are designed to create a supportive\, empowering\, and fun environment where women can learn new skills\, build confidence\, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together\, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance\, and make a lasting impact on Idaho's public lands.  \nThis Backpacking 101 course/trail project will provide a chance for new backpackers to learn together\, while out on a project improving trails! We're partnering with Kristina Schmid\, owner of Empower Her Outdoors \, whose mission is to empower women through outdoor education\, fostering a community of like-minded individuals who seek to learn\, grow\, and connect with nature. Kristian will help folks new to backpacking prepare prior to the trip through virtual meetups to talk training\, menu\, packing\, etc.  virtual meetups to talk training\, menu\, packing\, etc.   \nWe'll meet at the trailhead off Warren Wagon Road north of McCall and offer tips and guidance for packing up. We'll hike in together the 2.5 miles to base camp\, doing trail work as we go. After setting up camp\, work will be primarily on the Twenty Mile Lakes Trail\, clearing logs and cutting back brush. On Sunday\, continue working toward Twenty Mile Lakes before heading back to the trailhead. We'll work on improving the trail\, cutting out any logs\, brushing and light tread work.    \nMore info on All Trails   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Twenty Mile #85\, Twenty Mile Lakes Trails #315  \nItinerary: This is a three day project. Meet at the trailhead early Friday to pack up gear and hike into camp. Set up camp\, working Friday afternoon\, Saturday\,  and Sunday morning. Sunday early afternoon\, heading back to cars and heading home.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Pam Bond   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 30 minutes from McCall  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nNon-refundable trail project fee: $50  \nWhy do I need to pay a fee to volunteer for this trip? The fees collected will help to cover the costs of providing extra support and training for volunteers from EmpowHer Outdoors. The Backpacking 101 portion goes above and beyond what ITA is usually able to offer through volunteers. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. If you require assistance in paying this fee\, please contact us as trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.  \nDifficulty Rating  \nNo experience with backpacking needed! We ask volunteers to try to make the pre-trip Zoom sessions and take advantage of the support from EmpowHer Outdoors to be as prepared as possible when showing up to the trailhead. Please be in good hiking condition with boots broken in\, and gear tested. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous- 2.5 miles to first camp with little elevation gain/loss\, easy hike into camp! From here the trail we'll work on climbs steeply 3.3 more miles to the lakes. Carrying all your own personal gear\, and trail tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Saw work\, digging\, and swinging tools to clear any logs out of the trail and improve the trail tread to ensure proper width and slope. Volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace.
