2023 Bighorn Crags Monitoring (Full)

Volunteer Trail Work Project

Loading Events

This is a trail monitoring training project that will have ITA volunteers working alongside Forest Service wilderness rangers. This may include some light trail work, campground and trail monitoring, and clean-up in the incredible Big Horn Crags in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The views and scenery promise to be stunning!

Itinerary: Meet Wednesday afternoon/evening at the Crags Campground. Meet up with Forest Service personnel.  Working until Sunday, return to cars and head home.

Crew Leader: Leslie Hvozda

More Information:  General overview of the Crags from Summitpost.org

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Three hours from Challis

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 4/5 Strenuous
Trails in the Crags gain and lose elevation as they climb up and over ridges.  Volunteers will be carrying all their own gear and tools.
