Volunteer Trail Work Project

Loading Events

Volunteers will spend five days backpacking in the remote southern Seven Devils Mountains in the Hells Canyon Wilderness. Some of these trails have not seen maintenance for several years.  We’ll work down Horse Heaven Trail past Emerald Lake and then up towards Oxbow Saddle.

Trail:  Black Lake/Horse Heaven Trail #214, Casey Mountain Trail #216

Itinerary: Crew meet at Black Lake Campground Saturday afternoon/evening for an early start Sunday. Spend one day clearing starting from the campground. Monday, backpack up toward Emerald Lake, continuing to work up towards Casey Mountain, moving camp as needed. Friday backpack out; pack support may be available for the hike out.

Crew Leader: Barry Miller

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town:  Two hours form Council, Idaho- 4WD recommended after Smith Mt. Lookout

GAIA Map:  Casey Mountain

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

You should have some experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear.  This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.

Hike: 4/5 Strenuous
If the crew makes it to Oxbow Saddle, the total distance is about 2,500 feet elevation change over seven miles, with several switch backs up to the saddle. Crew will be hiking shorter distances each day as they make progress but may be carrying personal gear and tools along as they go. See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Work: 4/5 Strenuous
This area hasn’t been cleared in several years, especially the further up Casey Mountain/toward Oxbow Saddle the crew gets. Consistent saw work, hiking with gear and tools.
