Volunteer Trail Work Project

On National Public Lands Day, we’ll work this scenic trail that heads up to Chimney Rock on the Selkirk Mountains crest. The bottom parts of the trail always need lots of brushing and the upper parts will need to have logs removed and tread rebuilt. Fall colors should be great and if it’s hot, there is some great swimming in the Pack River. A great way to end the trail project season in northern Idaho.

Trail:  Chimney Rock Trail #256

Itinerary: The crew leader will specify meeting time & place for the morning and the crew will work until midafternoon.

Crew Leader: Howard Shay

More Information:   All Trails

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town:  1 hour from Sandpoint

GAIA Map:  Chimney Rock

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous
The first few miles are pretty flat, with 2,500 of elevation gain from the trailhead to the top. Generally suitable for beginner to moderately experienced hikers looking for a bit of a challenge and who are well-prepared (e.g., have worked out or hiked with a pack to prepare for the trip). See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous
Repeated digging or sawing. Carrying tools and days packs.  Less strenuous brushing at the beginning.  Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.
