ITA’s Women in the Wild Program is hosting the 2023 Coxey Creek- Women Only Project. This is a fly in trip to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness for a week of trail maintenance up Coxey Creek. The crew will fly into the Cabin Creek backcountry airstrip and hike up the Big Creek trail to the confluence with Coxey Creek. From here the crew will work up toward Crescent Meadows, approximately 4.7 miles. Coxey Creek is part of the Idaho Centennial Trail and hasn’t been maintained in several years.

Trail: Coxey Creek Trail #50/Idaho Centennial Trail

Itinerary:  Fly into Big Creek (swapping out with Cabin Creek Crew); hike upstream to confluence of Coxey Creek and Big Creek. Base camp here and begin working up, moving camp if necessary. Thursday hike back to Cabin Creek for pick up Friday morning.

Crew Leader: Cindy Walker

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall with Sawtooth Flying Service

GAIA Map:  Big Creek to Coxey Creek   Coxey Creek to Crescent Meadows

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

You should have some experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project, so injuries such as sprains and blisters, or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned, can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous
6.3 miles and 1,000 feet into camp. Slight uphill on the way in, but gradual with ups and downs. The hike into project work will get longer each day as we cut further in; the trail is 4.7 miles long with a steady uphill climb along the creek to Crescent Meadows.

Project Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous
This project will be focused on logout and brushing. Tools and gear will be carried into the project site, with some potential to move camp while clearing the trail.  This area burned 10 years ago and lots of down trees are expected for repeated saw work. You can expect a wide range of weather conditions in late May, please pack accordingly.
