Volunteer Trail Work Project

Loading Events

Join us for a five-day backpacking project clearing the upper portion of the Selway River Trail in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness.  This brushing project will start where crews the week before left off and will work downriver as far as possible. The goal is to make it to Shearer Airstrip, approximately 15 miles in. This gorgeous trail stays along the river, winding through the canyon featuring pristine wilderness.

Trail: Selway River Trail #4

Itinerary:  Meet at Paradise Campground Saturday evening. Sunday – Wednesday, brushing, moving camp along as the trail gets cleared. Thursday– meet the Forest Service packer to load backpacks, hike back to the trailhead, head home!

Crew Leader: Alex Cravener

More Information:   All Trails

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town:   Approx 3 hours from Darby, Montana

GAIA Map:  Selway River Trail

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

You should have some experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear.  This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous
Gentle hike following the river, but only slight elevation gain and loss. Volunteers will be carrying all their own gear, food, and tools. 15 miles to Shearer Airstrip. A Forest Service packer will meet the crew at the end of the project to pack backpacks out, allowing volunteers to hike out with light daypacks.

Project Work: 2/5 Moderate
Mostly bushing with potential for some log out, infrequent digging or swinging tools. Bending or kneeling for light saw work or brushing. Carrying tools and packs.
