Volunteer Trail Work Project

Loading Events

Volunteers will be working on clearing logs and brush around part of the stunning trail system that circles the Seven Devils Mountains in the Hells Canyon Wilderness.  This trail goes up and over ridges and past high mountain lakes. Steep climbs are rewarded with panoramic views, and you might even see a few mountain goats!  This is an out-and-back project; crews will work in as far as they can over the five days, bumping camp along as they go.  Pack support to bring volunteer gear out is available for the last day.

Trail: South Boise Trail #101

Itinerary: Hike from Windy Saddle Trailhead Wednesday morning, work west on the South Boise trail, logging out and bumping camp. Coordinate with the packer for gear pickup location Sunday and hike back to the trailhead.  Scouting efforts after the snow melts may shift plans slightly, but meeting location details and basic itinerary will not change.

Crew Leaders: Anne Poinier and Craig Strang

More Information:  All Trails of the whole loop

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Riggins

GAIA Map:  South Boise Trail First ten miles

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

You should have some experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear.  This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.

Hike: 5/5 – Very Strenuous
This trail gains and loses major elevation several times in the first 10 miles. Crews will bump camp as they go, so the hike back will be the most miles hiked in a day.  See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Work: 4/5 – Strenuous
Sections of this trail travel through an old burned area, with no shortage of trees to cut each year.  Expect some repetitive digging, swinging, and/or saw work. May be hiking longer distances (more than five miles) with gear and tools.
