2023 Wilderness Gateway – Youth

Volunteer Trail Work Project

Loading Events

This Youth Trail Crew (ages 14-18) weekend project will have volunteers work on the trails out of Wilderness Gateway off Highway 12 and the Lochsa River. This is a popular access point to the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness, and we’ll work on the first few miles of several of the trails right in the campground.  We’ll enjoy the luxuries of camping at an established campground and ITA volunteer cooks will help prepare delicious meals.

With guidance from crew leaders, volunteers will be involved in all aspects of camp life. This includes helping set out breakfast and lunch items, assisting the cook with dinner and dishes, ensuring water and sanitation supplies are available, and making sure tools are accounted for.

Volunteers are expected to adhere to Leave No Trace best practices and project safety expectations set by crew leaders.

Trails: Lochsa Peak Trail #220, Boulder Creek Trail #221, Lone Knob Trail #198

Itinerary: Volunteers will join for a pre-trip zoom meeting before the project. Friday– meet at camp late morning, go over trail work basics and safety. Work on the trails right out of the campground. Saturday– full day of trail work. Sunday– finish up work in the morning before cleaning up camp and getting picked up early afternoon.

Crew Leader: Patti Stieger and Brendan Blowers de León
