Five-day Backpack Project into the Rugged Seven Devils Mountains

Loading Events

Project Name: South Boise – Seven Devils

Dates: July 30-August 3

Volunteers will be working on clearing logs and brush around part of the stunning trail system that circles the Seven Devils Mountains in the Hells Canyon Wilderness. The focus is to work on the more neglected southern end of the loop from Dog Creek to Baldy Lake. This trip will offer big views of the iconic Seven Devils and Hells Canyon, famous for its rugged, steep terrain. Our work will help open a popular loop trail for backpackers, equestrians, and brave trail runners. Working on this loop has been a recurring project for ITA for years now in an area so beautiful we’re happy to return to it again and again.

The crews will work as far as they can over the five days, bumping camp along as they go. Pack support will come in the last day to bring volunteer gear back to cars. Depending how far we make it, this could be back the way we came or continuing forward to complete the loop! The steep climbs are rewarded with panoramic views, and often, a few mountain goats!

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

You should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.

If having the right gear to be safe and comfortable is a limiting factor, volunteers may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.

Hike: 4/5 Strenuous – The first 1.5 miles from the trailhead drops significantly with a much gentler grade to Dog Creek. The loop trail itself has several big climbs. Crew will be carrying all their own gear plus trail tools until the last day.

Project Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Crosscut saw work, brushing, and some tread work if needed. Sections of this trail travel through an old burned area with no shortage of trees to cut each year. May be hiking longer distances (more than five miles) with gear and tools when bumping camp.
