Project Name: Boulder Lake – Fall – Women in the Wild
Dates: September 12-14
ITA’s Women in the Wild trail projects are designed to create a supportive, empowering, and fun environment where women can learn new skills, build confidence, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance, and make a lasting impact on Idaho’s public lands.
One of the most popular trails in McCall, the Boulder Lake Trail, climbs past Boulder Meadows Reservoir, and on to Boulder Lake. Volunteers will backpack up to the lake this fall on this Women in the Wild project and spend two nights camping and working on the trails from here. At this junction, trails take off in almost every direction and continue to other lakes and mountain peaks. Popular with hikers, anglers, and backpackers, there are lots of day hikes or short overnighters accessible from this area. We’ll work on the Paddy Flat/Lake Fork Trail which climbs out of the Lake Basin up to Boulder Mountain (8366’), and over to Anderson Lake. Earlier in the summer, ITA will work with the Forest Service on the first few miles of trail.

Refundable deposit: $25
Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.
Difficulty Rating
You don’t need to have experience with backpacking, but please be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear (even if you test it in your backyard!) This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.
If having the right gear to be safe and comfortable is a limiting factor, volunteers may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.
