Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, this is a chance to explore everything the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness has to offer. The crew will start hiking downstream starting from Paradise Campground on the Selway River trail to Bad Luck Creek. The trail work starts here where we will clear up Bad Luck Creek to the Eagle Rock Trail. There are several good spots to camp as we move up opening the trail. We will pass Gardiner Peak, a staffed fire lookout, with panoramic views of the Bitterroot Mountains. Eagle Rock trail drops back down to the Selway River and the Selway Lodge/51 Ranch Outfitters. We’ll camp at the lodge Friday. There is an awesome suspension bridge across the river there with a great swimming hole where we can relax on the beach after a week of hard work! The Selway Lodge will pack our gear the 13 miles back up the river to Paradise Campground. This is a self-supported backpacking trip until we get to the Lodge and previous backpacking experience is recommended.
Difficulty Rating: 4 – Very Strenuous: Hiking long distances often uphill from a trailhead. (4000 feet elevation gain in first 12 miles, then climbs back down over the next 8). Overnight backpacking trips carrying all gear. Pack assistance not available until the end.
Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: 2 hours From Darby, Montana
Road Considerations: Paradise Campground is a popular boating site for the Selway River. The road in and campground can accommodate RVs and trailers. Access via the historic Magruder Road.
Refundable deposit: $50
Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho.
