In the Mallard Larkin Pioneer Area deep in the St. Joe river drainage, volunteers will spend a week backpacking and clearing trails around Fawn Lake and Martin Peak. We’ll be packed into our camp by Forest Service Mule Packers, and we will work each day from camp clearing as far as we can go over the week. With the pack support to help us get to our base camp, volunteers will just need to hike in with a day pack. Volunteers will be responsible for bringing their own backpacking meals for this project. The gorgeous and remote area offers amazing views from peaks and lookouts, fishing in high mountain lakes and streams, and is known for its diverse wildlife.
Difficulty Rating: 3 – Difficult: Hike medium to long distances from a trailhead. Week-long overnight backpacking trip. Pack support available.
More Information: All Trails, interesting blog about the area
Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: A little over 2 hours from Avery, Idaho
Road Considerations: AWD/ high clearance recommended
Refundable deposit: $50
Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
