Volunteer Trail Work Project

Volunteers will spend four nights backpacking and exploring the Gospel Hump Wilderness. Volunteers will be cutting logs out of the trail and brushing, bumping camp along as we clear. The majority of the work is toward the south end of the trail where a fire passed through last year. The fire did not get above the Silver Spur trail, and we won’t be camped in the burn area. This trail keeps to the creek, passing canyons and Fish Lake Research Natural Area. We hope to clear far enough to explore the Fish Lake RNA which has incredible and diverse vegetation and wildlife. Moose are known to forage here! Depending on trail conditions, the crew may opt to shuttle their vehicles to Orogrande Summit and hike through.

Difficulty Rating: 3 – Difficult: Hike medium to long distances from a trailhead – this is an multi -night backpacking trip. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance is not available.

Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: 2 hours South of Elk City

Road Considerations: Travel through the near Ghost Town of Dixie, Idaho

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
