ITA volunteers will spend a week camped in the Wilderness at Swet Cabin high in the mountains above the Salmon River. This is a fully supported trip and we’ll have pack stock to assist bringing in gear and food. Volunteers will only need to carry their personal gear. The crew will meet at the Salmon Base Camp Trailhead on the Magruder Corridor on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, the crew will start the hike up the Shoup-Elk Basin trail towards the Devils Washbowl and continue all the down the trail to Swet Creek. The project will then be working up Harrington Ridge down to Dennis Creek and back to Swet Cabin via Dennis Ridge, hopefully clearing and opening the whole loop. Each evening we’ll camp together at the cabin and enjoy meals provided and prepared by ITA volunteers.

Difficulty Rating: 4 – Very Strenuous: Hiking medium to long distances often uphill from the trailhead – this is an overnight backpacking trips. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance may/may not be available.

More Information: Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation Trip Report

Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: 3 hours from Darby, Montana

Road Considerations: Access via the historic Magruder Road. Plan on a full day drive to the trailhead.

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
