Deep in the wilderness, between the Seven Devils range and Hells Canyon, volunteers will spend a week maintaining trails on this fully supported trip. Volunteers will hike 9.5 miles to McGaffee Cow Camp, where we’ll base camp for the week. Pack stock will be available to carry in gear. Volunteers will only need to carry personal gear and admire the panoramic views of Hells Canyon. The crew will be working on the Bernard Creek trail, which drops to the Snake River, to try and clear the trail to where an ITA crew left off last spring. The crew will also work up to Dry Diggins Ridge, improving the switchbacks. Each evening we will relax and enjoy a meal together, packed and prepared by ITA volunteers. Stock will be back to pack gear back to the trailhead. Members of Backcountry Horseman and the Hells Canyon Trail Association will be with us to share their knowledge and stories of the area.

Difficulty Rating: 4 – Very Strenuous: Hiking medium to long distances often uphill from a trailhead – this is an overnight backpacking trip. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance is available.

More Information: Gaia Map

Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: Windy Saddle Trailhead is approximately 16.5 miles from Highway 95 at the turn off near Riggins. The drive after turning off on the 7 Devils Road takes about 60 minutes.

Road Considerations: The paved road turns to gravel about halfway to the trailhead. The gravel portion of the road is generally in good condition.

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
