Volunteers will spend five days in the very northern end of Idaho (hello Canada!) working with a US Forest Service crew on the trail up Red Top Mountain. The trail passes beautiful Hidden Lake where there is good camping, fishing, and swimming. The views from the summit of Red Top are described in a guidebook as “stupendous!” We will be backpacking two miles into base camp where we’ll return each evening. Food will be packed in and prepared by a forest service cook.
Difficulty Rating: 3 – Difficult: Hike medium to long distances from the trailhead and camp, with elevation gain– this is an overnight backpacking trip. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance is available, volunteers will still need to carry personal gear.
More Information: All Trails
Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: 1 hour from Bonners Ferry
Road Considerations: Gravel road suitable for all cars.
Refundable deposit: $50
Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
