Volunteer Trail Work Project

Deep in the remote Hells Canyon Wilderness, this weeklong backpacking trip features alpine lakes, meadows, and mountain peaks. Volunteers will meet Sunday at Black Lake Campground and backpack up Black Lake/ Horse Heaven Trail. We’ll camp near Stevens Saddle, about a 7-mile hike from the trailhead. The project is working from Stevens Saddle to Ruth Lake, clearing logs, brushing, and tread work.

Difficulty Rating: 3 – Difficult: Hiking medium to long distances from the trailhead with elevation gain– this is an overnight backpacking trip. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance may be available.

Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: 2 hours from Council, Idaho

Road Considerations: Long: The access road to the campground is steep and rough for the last 6 miles, and is not recommended for RVs, trailers, or low clearance vehicles. AWD and slow driving recommended.

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
