Volunteers will meet at the Windy Saddle Trailhead where we will leave early Saturday morning for our journey into the Hells Canyon Wilderness. We’ll spend four nights packing around the loop, logging out, brushing, and improving the tread, moving camp as we go. This trail gains and loses elevation several times over its 26 miles as it goes up and over ridges and crosses creeks. Lake-side camping opportunities, fields of wildflowers, and panoramic views of the Hells Canyon Wilderness are around every turn. You might even spot a mountain goat or two.
Difficulty Rating: 3 – Difficult: Hike medium to long distances from a trailhead with elevation loss and gain– this is a self-supported overnight backpacking trip.
More Information: Dave’s Blog, All Trails
Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: Windy Saddle Trailhead is approximately 16.5 miles from Highway 95 at the turn off near Riggins. The drive after turning off on the 7 Devils Road takes about 60 minutes.
Road Considerations: The paved road turns to gravel about halfway to the trailhead. The gravel portion of the road is generally in good condition.
Refundable deposit: $50
Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
