In partnership with Idaho Conservation League, volunteers will travel into the rugged Idaho backcountry on this self supported backpacking trip to help open South Fork Blackmare Trail. Starting at Kennelly Creek Campground, the crew will hike up Needles Summit Trail for 4 miles, then head off trail one mile over the pass into the Blackmare Lakes (about 2,500 Elevation gain). The crew will base camp at the lakes and work down on the South Fork Blackmare Trail, returning to camp every evening. The goal for the trail work is to clear toward Poverty Flat Trailhead, which means a lot of crosscut saw work logging out and brushing the trail. Spectacular lakeside camping and stunning backcountry Idaho views promise to be worth the hike in!
Difficulty Rating: 3 – Difficult: Hiking medium long distances from the trailhead to camp, and to the project site – this is an overnight backpacking trip. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance may not be available.

Refundable deposit: $50
Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
