This is a self-supported backpacking trip working on the South Fork Salmon River Trail from Hettinger Ranch to Mackay Bar. The crew will fly to the backcountry airstrip at Hettinger Ranch and backpack roughly 13.5 miles downstream. Work will be annual maintenance on the river trail, logging out, some brushing, and tread work. The crew will also stop at Porphyry Bridge and take measurements of length, size and what cuts on the bridge railings need replaced. At the end, the crew will be jet boated out of Mackay Bar to Vinegar Creek boat ramp, where we’ll shuttle folks back to McCall.  This unique access to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness promises to be a truly monumental experience.

Difficulty Rating:   3 – Difficult. Self-Supported backpacking trip with some elevation gain. This is  an overnight backpacking trip. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance is not available.

Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: Meeting at the McCall airport.

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
