ITA started this project in 2019, and we only have about a mile left to clear to get to Vance Lake. Come help us (finally!) get to the lake! Starting at the Whitecap Trailhead at Paradise Campground, we’ll have pack stock to help carry our gear to base camp about 12 miles up Whitecap Creek. From here we will keep pushing up towards Vance Lake. Work will consist of cutting trees off the trail and some brushing. After work each afternoon we’ll return to base camp to share meals together cooked by ITA volunteer chefs and take in the views of the Bitterroot Mountains.

Difficulty Rating: 4 – Very Strenuous: Hike medium to long distances often uphill. This is a multiday overnight backpacking trip. Pack assistance is available to bring gear into camp.

Estimated Drive Time to Meeting Spot: 2 hours From Darby, Montana

Road Considerations: Paradise Campground is a popular boating site for the Selway River, the road in and campground can accommodate RVs and trailers. Access via the historic Magruder Road.

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you need assistance paying the project fee, please contact us and we will waive the fee.
