SUMMARY:2026 Boiling Springs
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Boiling Springs  \nProject Dates:  May 2-3  \nStarting at Boiling Springs Hot Springs\, we'll work north along the Middle Fork of the Payette River.  Areas on this section of trail have become overgrown with low brush\, pushing hikers up off the original tread.  We'll work to reestablish the original route in the worst areas and address regular annual growth and potentially down trees or tread work based on after winter conditions.  ITA worked further up past the hot springs last year and will return later in the season to keep working further in\, where this trail was affected by wildfire in 2024.    \nWe'll car camp near the trailhead\, which offers plentiful dispersed camping near the Middle Fork River\, and a quick afterwork walk to the Boiling Springs Hot Springs. This is a popular trail enjoyed by hikers\, backpackers\, and hot springs enthusiasts.  \nMore info on All Trails   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Middle Fork Payette River Trail #033  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project.  Folks are welcome to come camp Friday night near the trailhead\, or plan to meet early Saturday morning.  Returning to camp at the trailhead Saturday night\, wrapping up work by midafternoon Sunday.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Walt and Pam Demetro joined by Deputy Crew Leaders!   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Garden Valley  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating   \nHike: 2/5 Moderate –   The trail is pretty flat for most of it\, with a few steep but short sections.  The bulk of the work is less than a mile in\, with no more than 2 miles hiking one way. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 2/5 Moderate – Mostly brushing and light saw work\, potential for down trees or tread work based on after winter conditions.   The weather in May can be unpredictable so please pack accordingly!  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Waitlist Sign-up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n This is a waitlist signup form not a signup to register for the project. SUMMARY:2026 Middle Fork Payette
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Middle Fork Payette  \nProject Dates:  September 19-22  \nStarting at Boiling Springs\, we'll backpack north along the Middle Fork of the Payette River. We will be working on immediate log out and drainage needs to help address the effects of the 2024 wildfires east of Cascade. This trail follows the river for 15 miles\, ending at Clear Creek Summit and is enjoyed by hikers\, backpackers\, and hot springs enthusiasts. Quick action is needed to stabilize the trail and keep it open in the areas that burned\, and annual maintenance and log out is needed in the areas that did not. ITA worked the first 3.75 miles of trail last year\, and this crew will re-clear and push forward!   \nFrom the trailhead it is 3.75 miles into our planned base camp. There are eight creek crossings on the way\, but all can be safely navigated\, and we can hike in our creek crossing shoes for much of the way vs taking our boots on and off all day.  There is a lovely open spot among big ponderosas just off the river for us to camp. Listen for elk calls bouncing off the canyon walls at night!  From here\, we'll continue to work north clearing\, fixing tread\, and brushing up as far as we can.  On the last full day\, we'll pack up early to camp at a well-established hot springs for the last evening together\, before retuning to cars the next morning. \nTrails: Middle Fork Payette River Trail #033  \nItinerary: This is a four-day project. Welcome to camp at the trailhead the night before\, for a morning start backpacking/working on Saturday.  Working Saturday – Monday\, and Tuesday back to the trailhead and heading home.    \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Taylor Mailly and Patti Stieger   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Garden Valley  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Lots of creek crossings bumped this up to a four vs a three\, but we scheduled later in the season to avoid high water.  Once at camp\, only one creek crossing to get to the project site past here.  No more than four miles round trip is expected for the maximum hike.  The trail follows the river\, dropping gently in elevation\, with some steep but short sections.  Carrying all personal gear and trail tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Crosscut and log out to clear trail. Tread work as needed to ensure proper drainage.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Waitlist Sign-up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n This is a waitlist signup form not a signup to register for the project.
