SUMMARY:2026 Horse Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Horse Creek  \nProject Dates: August 23-29  \nBetween the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and Montana's Bitterroot National Forest\, volunteers will meet for a car camping project. There is a series of trails that start at the end of Horse Creek Road and ITA will focus on log out and rock/tread clearing on all. The Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation has a project in the area after us\, so we may pivot focus on one trail to help get them further into a backcountry base camp. We'll be car camping near Horse Creek Hot Springs Campground and carpool down the last 4 miles to the trailhead.   \nFrom the trailhead Reynolds Creek\, Cayuse Creek\, and Horse Creek trails all branch into the Wilderness. Reynolds Creek Trailheads north and follows the creek gently before climbing up to the ridge above and Blue Joint Peak (8576') and the Reynolds Lakes. Cayuse Creek Trail switchbacks along the contours of Mist Peak (8615')\, eventually linking up to the trail that follows along the ridge. Horse Creek trail follows Horse Creek\, dropping down to the Main Salmon River.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Reynolds Creek #6157\, Cayuse Creek #6166\, and Horse Creek #6159  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Sunday\, meeting in the afternoon to set up camp. Project work Monday-Friday\, with a day off as needed to relax or explore. Saturday\, wrap up any work\, pack up camp\, and head home!  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Food Provided    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 2.5 hours from North Fork  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile for each Reynolds Creek\, Cayuse Creek\, and Horse Creek trails.   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous –  Each trail has some elevation gain and loss\, but only Cayuse climbs steeply. Depending on trail conditions and how far we can work\, no more than three miles of hiking one way per day is expected. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Saw work and brushing\, with some digging and swinging tools. Potential for some tread work and rock fall removal. Carrying tools and day packs short distances.   \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Waitlist Sign-up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n This is a waitlist signup form not a signup to register for the project.
