SUMMARY:2026 Bean Bacon Trailblazers
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Bean Bacon Trailblazers  \nProject Dates: July 19 – 25  \nThis weeklong project will work on the Bean-Bacon loop\, a spectacular backcountry route in the Bitterroot Mountains that winds through old-growth forest\, high ridge lines\, meadows\, alpine lakes\, and along the Wild & Scenic St. Joe River.  \nOver the course of the week\, we'll work on this beautiful wilderness loop to finish clearing downed logs\, brushing\, and restoring tread so the trail remains accessible and enjoyable for hikers and backpackers. The Bean-Bacon loop is known for its scenic variety — towering pines\, mossy streams\, mountain views\, and open meadows — making this an unforgettable place to work and explore.  \nWe'll be packed into our backcountry base camp by mules to a camp on the St. Joe River\, where a camp cook will provide meals for the week. From camp\, we'll organize into work groups each day to tackle remaining maintenance needs. Expect hands-on trail maintenance — no specialized experience is required\, and tools and guidance will be provided — along with plenty of time to enjoy the setting and camaraderie of a multi-day trail crew.  \nThis is a unique opportunity to experience a supported wilderness camp and help steward a stunning backcountry trail alongside fellow volunteers.  \nMore Information: All Trails for the Bean Bacon Loop   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrail: Bean Bacon #66  \nItinerary: Arrive at Spruce Tree Campground Saturday afternoon/evening. Meet packer Sunday morning to hike into base camp; the packer will pack gear. Work Monday-Friday with a day off mid-week to relax\, fish\, and explore. Saturday morning\, the packer will return to bring gear back to the trailhead. There is a potential to move camp mid-week\, depending on project work. Crew leader will specify the meeting time & place in their pre-trip emails.  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes  \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Packed Supported Projects\, Food Provided  \nCrew Leader: Don McIntosh  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1.5 hours from Avery\, Idaho   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have some experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.  \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous –  The hike to camp from the trailhead is about 5.6 miles\, slight uphill on the way in with several gains and losses of elevation totaling 2\,500 feet. We will take Line Creek/Broken Leg trail to our camp. Once at camp\, we'll make day trips out to the trail work\, with the hike getting longer each day as we work further from camp. Bacon Loop Trail  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Repeated digging or sawing\, the potential for some heavy lifting. Carrying tools and packs up to five miles each day. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Waitlist Sign-up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n This is a waitlist signup form not a signup to register for the project. SUMMARY:2026 Bean Bacon the Sequel
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Bean Bacon the Sequel  \nProject Dates: August 2-8 \nThis weeklong project is the second phase of our work on the Bean–Bacon loop\, continuing the trail maintenance we began earlier in the season on this spectacular backcountry route in the Bitterroot Mountains. The trail winds through old-growth forest\, high ridge lines\, meadows\, alpine lakes\, and hiking along the Wild & Scenic St. Joe River\, offering a stunning setting for a week of stewardship.  \nOver the course of the week\, we'll return to the loop to continue clearing downed logs\, brushing\, and restoring tread\, so the trail remains accessible and enjoyable for hikers and backpackers. The Bean–Bacon loop is known for its scenic variety — towering pines\, mossy streams\, mountain views\, and open meadows — making this an unforgettable place to work and explore.  \nWe'll establish a backcountry base camp with pack support\, with the exact campsite to be determined based on how far the first project group progresses. From camp\, we'll organize into work groups each day to tackle trail maintenance needs. Expect hands-on maintenance — no specialized experience is required\, and tools and guidance will be provided — along with plenty of time to enjoy the setting and camaraderie of a multi-day trail crew.  \nThis is a unique opportunity to experience a supported wilderness camp and help steward a stunning backcountry trail alongside fellow volunteers.  \nMore Information: All Trails for the Bean Bacon Loop   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email.
