SUMMARY:2026 Middle Fork Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Middle Fork Salmon  \nProject Dates: June 21- 27  \nThe Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Salmon River is an iconic Idaho river for good reason. Part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, backpackers\, hot spring enthusiasts\, equestrians\, and boaters all use this trail to access this incredible part of the Frank Church Wilderness. Volunteers will spend a week working in this beautiful area!   \nFlying into Pistol Creek\, we'll camp a night or two here\, working north and south on the Middle Fork River. We'll bump camp south\, along the Middle Fork to a base camp to work from for the rest of the project. Our camp site is TBD\, but pack support is available to bring our gear out and back. From this base camp we'll keep working on deferred brushing and tread maintenance as far as we can get over the week! This fly-in project will give ITA volunteers unique access to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and its tributaries!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Middle Fork Trail #001  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. On Sunday\, fly out of McCall. Working all week\, bumping camp\, mid-week with pack support. Friday afternoon\, return to camp near the airstrip for Saturday morning pickup and fly back to McCall.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support  \nCrew Leader: Dagmar Rapp and James Grantham    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous –  The trail follows the river the whole time\, with some steeper sections and ups and downs\, but overall\, very little elevation gain. Camp TBD but estimated 5-7 miles from Pistol Creek and up to a total of 11 miles; depending on trail conditions and crew progress. Lots of hiking carrying personal gear and tools\, with some pack support. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Lots of brushing and tread work\, digging and swinging tools\, improving creek crossings. Hikes into the project area longer each day as we work further out from camp. Carrying day packs and tools.   \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Waitlist Sign-up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n This is a waitlist signup form not a signup to register for the project.
