SUMMARY:2026 Middle Fork Salmon - Spring
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Middle Fork Salmon – Spring  \nProject Dates: April 8-15  \nThe Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Salmon River is an iconic Idaho river for good reason. Part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, backpackers\, hot spring enthusiasts\, equestrians\, and boaters all use this trail to access this incredible part of the Frank Church Wilderness. Volunteers will spend eight days immersed in this beautiful area!   \nAfter a scenic backcountry flight into Indian Creek airstrip\, we'll camp a few days nearby to work on some heavier trail rebuilds near Pungo Creek\, alongside Forest Service personnel. After this project\, we'll pack up and move camp east and work our way to the Thomas Creek airstrip. We'll address tread\, logout\, and brushing needs\, bumping camp along as we go. We'll have raft support to help bring our gear down over the week\, so hiking with just our day packs and tools! This fly-in project will give ITA volunteers unique access to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and its tributaries!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Middle Fork Trail #001  \nItinerary: This is an eight-day Wednesday to Wednesday project. Flying out of McCall early the first Wednesday to Indian Creek airstrip. Working and bumping camp along the Middle Fork to Thomas Creek the last Wednesday morning\, flying out from here back to civilization!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here    \nGear Packing List: Crew leader will share more information on weight or bulk restrictions for the flights/raft support closer to the project. Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support  \nCrew Leader: Glenn Florence and Michelle Florence   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying from McCall   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 2/5 Moderate –  9.5 miles between airstrips\, and 8 days to hike it! The Middle Fork Trail loses elevation gradually\, with some steeper up and down sections but only a net of 300 feet elevation loss over the whole stretch. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous -Treadwork\, brushing\, and logout. Potential for some larger tread reconstruction projects alongside the Forest Service\, digging and swinging tools\, improving creek crossings. The weather in April can be unpredictable so please pack accordingly!  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n\n \n \n Waitlist Sign-up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n This is a waitlist signup form not a signup to register for the project. SUMMARY:2026 Main Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Main Salmon  \nProject Dates:   April 23-29  \nThe Salmon River cuts through the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, through deep granite canyons filled with a rich history. ITA is sending a crew to spend a week taking in the pristine wilderness and helping repair tread damage caused by effects from a wildfire and flooding along the Salmon River Trail.  The crew will take a thrilling jet boat ride from the Carey Creek boat ramp to camp at Bargamin Creek for the week. From base camp\, the crew will address major tread work on the section of the trail between Bargamin Creek and Rattlesnake Creek. Working with Forest Service staff\, this is a chance for some hands-on experience with big rock work!   \nITA is partnering with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Wilderness Foundation\, who will also have a crew out for the duration. This allows us to double up efforts and resources to make a big impact on this section! This section of trail is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, and ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.  This is a great project for those looking to get out early in the season and learn or hone in on some more advanced trail work skills for the upcoming year.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Salmon River Trail #96  \nItinerary: This is a Thursday – Wednesday\, weeklong project.  Meeting at Carey Creek Boat Ramp early Thursday to be taken into camp.  Working Thursday – Tuesday\, with a rest day as needed.  On Wednesday the jet boat returns and brings the crew back to the boat ramp.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Think of the jetboat as your "mule." SUMMARY:2026 Loon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Loon Creek  \nProject Dates: April 26 – May 2  \nDeep in the heart of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, volunteers will spend a week brushing and clearing the trail along Loon Creek. This trail is an important access point to the Wilderness for boaters\, backpackers\, backcountry pilots\, and hot springs enthusiasts exploring the Middle Fork and an important connecting trail for hunters and outfitters.  \nStarting at Lower Loon airstrip along the Middle Fork Salmon River\, we'll camp near the river for a night or two before potentially bumping camp further in\, brushing and clearing up as far as we can over the week. The trail follows the creek through the lush drainage; brushing and rock removal is the priority. As time allows\, we can work on the Middle Fork East Trail doing treadwork and log out as well.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Loon Creek Trail #4101  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Sunday morning\, fly out of Cascade. Work all week\, bumping camp along as needed. By Friday afternoon\, return to camp near the airstrip (or hot springs?) for Saturday morning pickup and flight back.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Alisa Rettschlag and Gregg Rettschlag   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of Cascade  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? \nHike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Loon Creek climbs steadily as it gets further from the Middle Fork\, but only about 1000 net elevation gain and loss over 10 miles. Hiking carrying trail tools and all personal gear. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous –  Brushing and some tread work. Potential for some saw work.  You can expect a wide range of weather conditions in April; please pack accordingly.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there are no volunteer spots available\, click “Sign Up” to get on our waitlist for this project! \nWaitlist Signups: 0 \nSign Up×Sign Up\n \n \n Waitlist Sign-up\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n This is a waitlist signup form not a signup to register for the project. SUMMARY:2026 Sheep Creek - River Camp
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Sheep Creek – River Camp  \nProject Dates:   April 29 – May 3  \nVolunteers will get a chance to explore the Gospel Hump Wilderness with the luxuries of a river side base camp\, complete with food and cook provided! The trip starts with a jet boat ride on the Salmon River from Vinegar Creek boat ramp to the mouth of Sheep Creek. The crew will set up camp here and work up the Sheep Creek drainage.  Work will include cutting out logs\, cutting brush\, and improving tread as needed as far up the Sheep Creek Trail as time allows\, heading back to the river base camp each afternoon.   \nThe Sheep Creek Trail follows along the creek\, heading north into the heart of the Gospel Hump Wilderness. ITA has been working on trails in this drainage and to the west for many years now\, last year heading up the hill toward Johnson Saddle. The first two miles have been regularly logged out over the years. Past this\, the trail sees less maintenance\, and lots of fun crosscut work is expected! This crew will tag out with a backpacking crew coming in on the boat picking us up on Sunday\, so between both crews we expect to make a big impact on this trail!   \nMore info (covering beyond the scope for this project) on this ITA Trail Spotlight.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Sheep Creek Trail #201  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project. Meeting Wednesday morning at the boat ramp to load up gear and take it into camp.   Working Wednesday – Saturday.  Sunday\, the boat returns to swap out the next crew and bring us back to the boat ramp\, head home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes   \nGear Packing List: Think of the jetboat as your "mule." Crew leader will provide more information closer to the trip as weight/bulk limitations are set by the boat captain.  Gear Checklist for Pack Supported Projects\, Food Provided  \nCrew Leader: Glenn Florence and Michelle Florence   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Riggins    \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. Camp at the beach\, hiking further into work each day. Not expecting more than 4 miles one way for the longest hike. Carrying day packs and trail tools. SUMMARY:2026 Boiling Springs
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Boiling Springs  \nProject Dates:  May 2-3  \nStarting at Boiling Springs Hot Springs\, we'll work north along the Middle Fork of the Payette River.  Areas on this section of trail have become overgrown with low brush\, pushing hikers up off the original tread.  We'll work to reestablish the original route in the worst areas and address regular annual growth and potentially down trees or tread work based on after winter conditions.  ITA worked further up past the hot springs last year and will return later in the season to keep working further in\, where this trail was affected by wildfire in 2024.    \nWe'll car camp near the trailhead\, which offers plentiful dispersed camping near the Middle Fork River\, and a quick afterwork walk to the Boiling Springs Hot Springs. This is a popular trail enjoyed by hikers\, backpackers\, and hot springs enthusiasts.  \nMore info on All Trails   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Middle Fork Payette River Trail #033  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project.  Folks are welcome to come camp Friday night near the trailhead\, or plan to meet early Saturday morning.  Returning to camp at the trailhead Saturday night\, wrapping up work by midafternoon Sunday.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Walt and Pam Demetro joined by Deputy Crew Leaders!   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Garden Valley  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. \nDifficulty Rating   \nHike: 2/5 Moderate –   The trail is pretty flat for most of it\, with a few steep but short sections.  The bulk of the work is less than a mile in\, with no more than 2 miles hiking one way. See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 2/5 Moderate – Mostly brushing and light saw work\, potential for down trees or tread work based on after winter conditions.   The weather in May can be unpredictable so please pack accordingly! SUMMARY:2026 Sheep Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Sheep Creek  \nProject Dates:   May 3-7  \nVolunteers will get a chance to explore the Gospel Hump Wilderness on this jet boat supported backpacking project. The trip starts with a jet boat ride on the Salmon River from Vinegar Creek boat ramp to the mouth of Sheep Creek\, tagging out with another ITA crew.  The crew will backpack up the Sheep Creek drainage\, working and bumping camp further into the wilderness. Picking up where the last crew left off\, so exact location may vary\, but we'll have an estimated 3 miles hike into the first camp. The crew will keep cutting out logs\, cutting brush\, and improving tread as needed as far up the Sheep Creek Trail as time allows before heading back to the river for a ride back to the boat ramp.   \nThe Sheep Creek Trail follows along the creek\, heading north into the heart of the Gospel Hump Wilderness. ITA has been working on trails in this drainage and to the west for many years now\, last year heading up the hill toward Johnson Saddle. So\, the first two miles have been regularly logged out over the years. Past this gets less maintenance\, and lots of fun crosscut work is expected! Between both crews we expect to make a big impact on this trail! Meet at Vinegar Creek boat ramp early Sunday morning to meet the jet boat pilot. Jet boat to Sheep Creek\, swapping out with the last crew.  Backpack to camp up the Sheep Creek Trail. During the week continue trail work\, bumping camp as appropriate. Wednesday hike back to the river for a morning pickup on Thursday.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No – This project is eligible for backpacking food per diem.  More information here     \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Jen Elliott  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Riggins  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Trail steadily climbs uphill as it follows Sheep Creek. 2800 feet of climb in 7 miles. SUMMARY:2026 Cabin Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Cabin Creek  \nProject Dates: May 3-9  \nThis is a fly-in trip into some of the most remote country in the lower 48. Join ITA for a week of backpacking and trail work along Big Creek. The crew will fly into the Cabin Creek backcountry airstrip in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and work down Big Creek Trail towards the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The crew will work to clear and brush the trail\, improve tread\, and address any slides. Backpacking and bumping camp as work allows\, we'll see a beautiful section of this trail as it follows Big Creek. This main backcountry "highway" for hikers and stock is a very important trail in the Frank and an annual project for ITA.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Big Creek Trail #196  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday – Saturday weeklong project. Meet in Cascade early Sunday morning to fly into Cabin Creek. Backpacking and working towards the Middle Fork. Hike back to Cabin Creek for an early flight back Saturday\, swapping out with another ITA crew.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Cindy Walker and Bill Griffin   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of Cascade  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Carrying all personal gear\, food\, and tools 13.5 miles one way\, with ups and downs\, approximately 2\,000 feet total elevation gain/loss. See the linked map for the elevation profile.   \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – This project will be removing logs\, cutting brush\, removing rocks and sloughs and overall improving the trail tread\, potentially moving large amounts of earth to fix slides. This is ponderosa pine and Douglas fir country so the trees may be big and complex. You can expect a wide range of weather conditions in May; please pack accordingly. SUMMARY:2026 Lake Shore Trail
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Lakeshore Trail  \nProject Dates: May 16-17  \nITA's Women in the Wild trail projects are designed to create a supportive\, empowering\, and fun environment where women can learn new skills\, build confidence\, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. These all-female trail crews provide a unique space for volunteers to work together\, gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance\, and make a lasting impact on Idaho's public lands.  \nJoin us for a Women in the Wild project on Upper Priest Lake\, a special opportunity for women to come together and make a lasting impact on the environment. ITA volunteers will focus on clearing fallen logs and brush along the Lakeshore Trail\, which winds along the pristine upper western shore of Priest Lake in northern Idaho. This women-only event fosters a supportive and empowering atmosphere as we work side by side to restore the trail for the season.  We will be car camping nearby to enjoy the beauty of the lake and connect with fellow women in the outdoors. This annual ITA tradition is dedicated to clearing the trees that fall over the winter\, ensuring this gorgeous trail remains open and accessible for all.  \nMore info can be found on All Trails.  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Lakeshore Trail #294  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time and place in their pre-trip emails. We will have a camp Friday night\, and we encourage you to join us to get to know each other before a weekend of working together. We will begin near Beaver Creek Boat Launch/Trailhead Saturday morning. Work Saturday until Sunday afternoon; camping at Beaver Creek Campground.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List:  Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food   \nCrew Leader: Leslie Hvozda  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: About 1 hour from Priest River  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile    \nRefundable deposit: $25   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute\, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. SUMMARY:2026 Sixty-Two Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Sixty-Two Ridge  \nProject Dates:   May 24-30  \nDeep in the beautiful Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness\, we'll work up the Sixty-Two Ridge Trail on a remote section of the Idaho Centennial Trail. We'll work on the switchbacks and beyond as it climbs above the Selway River. Gear will be packed into our backcountry camp along the Wild and Scenic Selway River. Starting from the Race Creek trailhead\, we'll hike about 12 miles to camp at Bar Creek on the Selway River Trail\, where we'll set up for the week. Each day\, we'll work higher up the ridge\, returning to camp each afternoon. At the end of the week\, pack stock will return to bring our gear back to camp.   \nThis section of the Selway is a great low-elevation\, early season trail\, very popular with hikers\, backpackers\, and equestrians. The Sixty-Two Ridge Trail climbs above the river\, connecting with several trails in the heart of the Selway- Bitterroot Wilderness. ITA worked on the switchbacks in 2025\, and this crew will continue to focus on improving the switchbacks that are beginning to slough off the hill\, as well as log out and brushing.  This crew's work will help support a Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation Crew getting packed in later in the season.  This combined effort promises to make a big impact on this section of the ICT!   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Sixty-Two Ridge Trail #606  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project.  Meet at Race Creek Sunday morning to drop gear with packers and hike in. Welcome to car camp the evening before at the trailhead.  Monday-Friday\, working up Sixty-Two Ridge. Rest day as needed. Saturday pack stock returns to bring gear back to the trailhead.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support  \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 15 min from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile for the Hike to Camp and the Sixtytwo Ridge Trail   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? Carrying day packs\, maybe some tools into camp. From camp\, Sixty-Two Ridge switchbacks steeply up the hill before leveling out along the ridge. See the linked maps for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Focus on tread work\, with increasing climbs to work each day. Improving switchbacks\, digging\, and swinging tools. SUMMARY:2026 Selway River - Paradise
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Selway River – Paradise  \nProject Dates: May 29-31  \nThe Selway River Trail follows the Wild and Scenic Selway River as it flows through the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness. This is an important main line trail for hikers\, backpackers\, boaters\, and stock to access this pristine wilderness area. ITA has been asked to help open it up for the season! Meeting Thursday night\, we'll work one day from Paradise Campground (the put in for boaters launching on the Selway)\, working to clear logs and brush as needed as far downstream as we can. On Saturday\, we'll load up light overnight packs and backpack downstream to Running Creek\, about 7 miles in. We'll work the remainder of the day\, camp out overnight here and in the morning pack up and hike back to the trailhead\, finishing any tree clearing as we go. DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Marsh Creek  \nProject Dates: May 29-31  \nIn the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, volunteers will help clear the Marsh Creek Trail. Just off Highway 21\, we'll car camp near Lola Creek Campground and work on the first four miles towards the Middle Fork of the Salmon River where past fires in the area mean trees continue to fall\, blocking access. Brush and falling rocks also impact the trail each year. After work each day\, we'll return to camp near the trailhead.  \nThis trail offers hikers\, backpackers\, fishermen\, and hot spring enthusiasts a chance to explore the headwaters of the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Salmon River. SUMMARY:2026 Taylor Ranch - Youth
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Taylor Ranch – Youth   \nDates: May 31 – June 6  \nITA's Youth Trail Crew Program provides opportunities for youth ages 14-18 to learn about the outdoors while building and maintaining hiking trails in a safe\, teamwork-oriented environment.  \nThis advanced backcountry project is designed for returning youth crew members who are ready for a fully immersive experience in Idaho's largest wilderness. Participants will fly into Taylor Ranch and work down creek\, traveling deep into the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness. The week combines extended backpacking\, remote living\, and hands-on trail work\, offering a realistic look at what it takes to live and work in hard-to-access public lands.  \nThroughout the project\, participants will help maintain an essential corridor along Big Creek by completing brushing\, tread repair\, and slide removal. In addition to trail work\, the crew will connect with professionals working in a range of natural resource careers\, including trail and wilderness operations\, land management\, logistics\, and field-based science. Crew members will also share responsibility for all aspects of camp life\, including camp setup\, water and sanitation\, and tool management\, while building leadership\, communication\, and teamwork skills and practicing Leave No Trace and project safety expectations.   \nITA's youth projects are completely free for volunteers to join\, and all food is provided. Gear can be borrowed from ITA if needed with advance notice\, or youth may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See ourFAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Big Creek Trail #196\, others from Big Creek TBD  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Volunteers and a parent/guardian will join a pre-trip Zoom meeting before the project. Meet in McCall early Saturday morning and fly into Taylor Ranch. Backpacking and working towards the Middle Fork. Hike back to Cabin Creek with a stop at Taylor Ranch for an early flight back to McCall Saturday Morning.  \nFood Provided by ITA: Yes – Backpacking   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Taylor Mailly and Barry Miller   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall   \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile  \nYouth Trip Selection:   \nYouth trip sign-ups will be open until March 22nd. Although early sign-ups will be prioritized\, ITA leadership and staff may adjust the final crews to maximize trip experience and provide opportunities for the greatest number of youth participants. To help facilitate trip assignments\, please sign up for your preferred trip and include alternate trips you could participate in\, should the preferred trip not be available. You will receive notification of trip assignment via email prior to March 31st. \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – Carrying all personal gear\, food\, and tools. The Big Creek Trail has ups and downs as it follows the creek but with no major elevation gain or loss. Depending on work\, the crew may work up the ridge trails which climb steeply out of the creek into the surrounding mountains.   \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – This project will be removing logs\, cutting brush\, removing rocks and sloughs and overall improving the trail tread\, potentially moving large amounts of earth to fix slides. This is ponderosa pine/Douglas fir country so the trees may be big and complex. SUMMARY:2026 Lochsa Peak
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Lochsa Peak  \nProject Dates:   June 5-7  \nVolunteers will spend the weekend working out of Wilderness Gateway\, just off winding Highway 12 and the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River. This is a popular access point to the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness\, and we'll work on the Lochsa Peak Trail. This section is part of the Idaho Centennial Trail\, but instead of thru-hiking\, we'll enjoy the luxuries of camping in an established campsite.  \nWe'll begin at the Wilderness Gateway Trailhead and work up Lochsa Peak as far as we can. The trail travels through a beautiful\, shaded forest with a mix of switchbacks and long\, straight sections. While the climb is fairly steady\, it's mostly shaded. The area receives enough rainfall to support dense undergrowth and plenty of wildflowers where the forest opens up.  Occasional breaks in the trees offer sweeping views of the surrounding area!  \nCheck out this ITA Trail Spotlight about this trail!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Lochsa Peak Trail #220  \nItinerary: This is a weekend project.  Welcome to camp with the crew leader starting Friday night\, and car camping near the trailhead for the entirety of the project.  Working all day on Saturday. Wrapping up any work Sunday morning\, heading home early afternoon.   \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Clay Jacobson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour from Kooskia  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. SUMMARY:2026 Ridge to Rivers - National Trails Day
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Ridge to Rivers – National Trails Day  \nProject Dates:   June 6  \nJoin us on National Trails Day and get out in the foothills for a morning of trail work! Project specifics will be determined after the muddy season\, but we'll be working to improve trails in the Boise foothills. Over the years\, ITA has helped with big tread/trail surface projects\, moving dirt or importing gravel material to make trails more durable for the muddy trail season. Project work could also include brushing\, tread repair\, or any special project identified by our partners at Ridge to Rivers.   \nNational Public Lands Day is the country's largest single-day volunteer event for public lands\, taking place every year on the fourth Saturday in September. Since its inception in 1994\, NPLD has brought together hundreds of thousands of volunteers to help restore and preserve America's public lands. Join us for one of ITA's many statewide projects to celebrate this day!  \nTrails: Trails TBD – crew leader will communicate specifics closer to the project via email.  \nItinerary:  One day project\, the crew leader will specify the meeting time & place in their pre-trip emails. \nFood Provided by ITA:  No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for One-Day Projects  \nCrew Leader: Brenda Magnuson   \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Estimated about 15 minutes from downtown Boise  \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 2/5 Moderate – Typically\, a short\, relatively flat hike in. SUMMARY:2026 Ditch Creek
DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Ditch Creek  \nProject Dates:   June 7-13  \nDeep in the beautiful Selway Bitterroot Wilderness\, we'll work up the Ditch Creek Trail to the Moose Ridge Trail\, one of the most remote sections of the Idaho Centennial Trail. We'll fly from McCall into Shearer\, a backcountry airstrip along the Selway River. The trail may be clear from earlier season's efforts\, but the crew may need to camp at Shearer and work up Ditch Creek for a day to ensure the trail is passable to stock.  Once clear\, 51 Ranch Outfitters will provide pack support to move gear up to a base camp along Ditch Creek.  The crew will work up Shearer Ridge and Ditch Creek\, cutting out logs and clearing trails\, possibly moving camp once during the week depending on the number of down trees we find\, and then backpacking out to catch a flight home.   \nITA\, the Forest Service\, and Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation have all put time into re-opening and maintaining this section of trail over the past several years\, and on this project we will re-clear and build on the work completed last year. This project will also ensure that pack support from 51 Ranch will be available to the next ITA crew the following week\, who will be packed further up to work on the Moose Ridge Trail\, which is part of the ICT. Between the two projects\, ITA will make a big impact on trails in this incredible area!  \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Ditch Creek Trail #523\, Shearer Ridge #547  \nItinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Fly out of McCall early Sunday morning. Possible to camp at Shearer for a day\, then work with the outfitter/packer to move camp up the trail 5 miles. Friday\, hike back to Shearer to prepare for a Saturday morning flight back to McCall.  \nFood Provided by ITA: No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects with Pack Support \nCrew Leader: Ray Arguello    \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Flying out of McCall  \nTrail Map:  Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue.  If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 4/5 Strenuous – 5 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain to the first camp; trail follows along the creek. But after the first camp location\, Shearer Ridge hosts a mile of switchbacks to climb up to the ridge.  See the linked map for the elevation profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Lots of saw work\, brushing\, and some tread work. The trail was cleared last year\, and we'll re-clear and push forward! SUMMARY:2026 Selway River South
DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Selway River South  \nProject Dates: June 10-14  \nCome enjoy a backcountry adventure along the headwaters of the Selway River! Starting at the Historic Magruder Ranger Station\, we'll backpack south from here\, cutting out logs as we go in a "cut and run" style project. This means more emphasis on log out and opening the trail as far as possible vs focusing on brushing and tread work. This trail is an important access point to the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness\, popular with day hikers and backpackers exploring the Magruder Corridor and an important connecting trail for hunters and outfitters.  \nOn the first night\, we will backpack to Upper Crossing (about 5 miles in) and as work allows bump camp further during the week. There are some great backcountry campsites all along the headwaters of the Wild and Scenic Selway River\, with a chance to cover up to 12 miles. The goal is to cover as much trail as possible during this project.   \nProject information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Selway River Trail #4   \nItinerary: This is a five-day project. Meeting at the trailhead on the morning of June 10th\, ready to backpack. Bumping camp each night as work allows. On the 14th\, packing up and hiking back to the trailhead to head home!   \nFood Provided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpacking Projects  \nCrew Leader: Alex Cravener  \nEstimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 45 min from Darby\, Montana  \nTrail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nHike: 1/5 Easy – Project location is about 500 feet from the road.   \nProject Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous –   Bridge building will entail carrying and staging materials and lumber\, hammering\, cutting\, drilling.
