Do you remember going on outdoor trips when you were young? Do you have fond memories of making s’mores around a campfire, learning how to pitch a tent, and using a crosscut saw to clear trails? Okay, probably not that last one. But maybe you remember hiking as a kid! Outdoor experiences from childhood have shaped many of us into who we are today.
For some young people living in Idaho today, the opportunities or resources don’t exist to experience our state’s extensive trail system and the wonder of being outdoors on a trip. ITA’s Youth Program aims to get students ages 14-18 outside and learning how to maintain trails as part of a team. On one-week trips into Idaho’s backcountry, our students learn communications skills and problem solving. Our program fosters an appreciation of the beauty of Idaho and the precious resources that our state has to offer.
“This experience was one that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. The relationships and memories that I formed on this trip will last a lifetime.” – Gracie, one of the 25 participants in our first ever Youth Program projects.
ITA’s Youth Trail Crew program began in 2019 with three trips and we are hoping to expand to eight trips for the 2021 and 2022 season. We have been awarded a challenge grant from the Harry Morrison Foundation. If we can raise $20,000 this year for Idaho’s youth, we will receive an additional $10,000. For every $2 you give, $1 will be matched to help get young people outside and learning valuable life lessons. This Idaho Gives, consider giving a donation to support ITA’s growing youth program. Help us reach our goal of raising $5,000 during Idaho Gives!
As a bonus, every donor that gives $100 or more will receive their choice of our brand new ITA shirt or cup.
