Our Trail Spotlight highlights day trips to multi-day hikes across Idaho. Trail conditions can change quickly- swollen rivers can become impassable, windstorms can knock trees down across trails, and snow can come earlier than expected. Please take these recommendations as a jumping off place and do additional research to understand current conditions and  keep yourself safe if you choose to hike this trail. Physical guidebooks and maps are always good to have or check out some online resources like Alltrails.com for updated trail reports. If your trip is as awesome as you hope it will be, please share photos and feedback!

Title: Mogensen Trail

Recommended by: Kelly Hewes, Communications Director

Duration: day hike

Area: just outside of Twin Falls

Difficulty Rating: 2/5–small amount of elevation gain, one steep stair section.

Road Considerations: Paved all the way to the trailhead

Total hiking miles: 2.2 miles out and back

The Hike: If you’re looking for a short but unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Magic Valley, the Mogensen Trail delivers big scenery in a small package. Tucked beside the Snake River in Twin Falls, this 2-mile round-trip hike packs in dramatic canyon walls, sweeping river views, and some of the most iconic sights in southern Idaho.

The trail begins just downstream of the famous Perrine Bridge—one of the world’s premier BASE jumping spots—so keep an eye out for jumpers soaring overhead as you start your hike! From there, the path winds along the riverbank, threading through basalt formations and sagebrush slopes while offering constant views of the deep Snake River Canyon. Just past the bridge, the trail cuts right through a BASE jumpers landing pad.

Along the way, you’ll cross a small footbridge, wander past springs trickling down the cliffside, and enjoy multiple spots perfect for photography, picnicking, or simply soaking in the canyon’s peaceful atmosphere. With minimal elevation gain, this trail is approachable for most hikers and makes a great option for families or anyone looking for a relaxed outing with maximum payoff.

Things to consider: Keep an eye out for BASE jumpers! As this trail intersects a landing pad, make sure you pay attention and are out of the way if there are people jumping. There is a steep staircase towards the beginning of the hike which could be difficult for rambunctious dogs. Some of the wooden bridges may get icy in the winter months so take care when crossing. It has also been reported to be buggy in the summer months.
