We’re hosting a weeklong backcountry project working north and south along the State Line National Recreation Trail. We’ll have pack support to assist us in bringing personal gear to establish a base camp near St. Joe Lake. The lake sits about 1,000 feet below the ridge we’re working along but swimming and fishing after work each day make the climb worthwhile.
The State Line National Recreation Trail stays high along the Idaho/Montana Divide, overlooking mountain lakes, with sweeping views clear to the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park. This section of trail is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail, and ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1,000-mile trail each year.
Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.
Trails: State Line National Recreation Trail #738
Itinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. The crew leader will specify the meeting time & place in their pre-trip emails, as it may change depending on access for our pack support. Tentative plan is to camp near Missoula Lake Campground the night before and meet the packer at the trailhead Sunday morning, to be packed to camp at the lake. Work each day (with a day off mid-week to relax and explore) and return to camp in the evenings. Saturday, packer returns to bring gear back to the trailhead, heading home.
Food Provided by ITA: No
Crew Leader: Don McIntosh
Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1.5 hours from Superior, Montana

Refundable deposit: $50
Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.
