Trail Work & Hot Springs: Restoring the Middle Fork Payette

Loading Events

Project Name:  Boiling Springs

Project Dates:  May 2-3

Starting at Boiling Springs Hot Springs, we'll work north along the Middle Fork of the Payette River.  Areas on this section of trail have become overgrown with low brush, pushing hikers up off the original tread.  We'll work to reestablish the original route in the worst areas and address regular annual growth and potentially down trees or tread work based on after winter conditions.  ITA worked further up past the hot springs last year and will return later in the season to keep working further in, where this trail was affected by wildfire in 2024.

We'll car camp near the trailhead, which offers plentiful dispersed camping near the Middle Fork River, and a quick afterwork walk to the Boiling Springs Hot Springs. This is a popular trail enjoyed by hikers, backpackers, and hot springs enthusiasts.

Refundable deposit: $25

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 2/5 Moderate –   The trail is pretty flat for most of it, with a few steep but short sections.  The bulk of the work is less than a mile in, with no more than 2 miles hiking one way. See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Work: 2/5 Moderate – Mostly brushing and light saw work, potential for down trees or tread work based on after winter conditions.   The weather in May can be unpredictable so please pack accordingly!

Volunteer Spots: 15
