Volunteer Trail Work Project

2024 Kirkwood Bridge (Full)

Loading Events

ITA and the Hells Canyon Recreation Collaborative (HCRC) are partnering with the Wallowa Whitman National Forest to replace two bridges at Kirkwood Ranch, deep in Hells Canyon National Recreation Area along the Snake River. Volunteers will jet boat from Pittsburg Landing to the Pittsburg Administrative Site (just across the river from Pittsburg Landing) and set up base camp. They will then jet boat six miles up to historic Kirkwood Ranch, only accessible via the river or on foot. At the end of each day, the volunteers will jet boat back to Pittsburg Admin Site with access to some cabin amenities, and where a volunteer cook will provide breakfast and dinners (BYO lunches). We’ll be picked up at the end of the project by jet boat and taken back to Pittsburg Landing to head home!

This project is to move any additional bridge material needed from Pittsburg Landing to Kirkwood Ranch and assist in the bridge construction at Kirkwood.

Itinerary: This is a Monday-Thursday project. Sunday evening, or early Monday, meet at Pittsburg Landing in the morning to catch the jet boat. Working Monday- Thursday. Depending on the weather, we may work in the morning and evenings, taking a break during the hottest part of the day. Thursday afternoon, early evening jet boat back to Pittsburg Landing.

Food Provided by HCRC: Breakfast and dinner provided by HCRC. First meal will be dinner Monday night and the last meal will be Thursday breakfast.  Volunteers will need to bring their own lunch/snacks.  We encourage lunches that consist of food that does not require refrigeration.

Crew Leader: TBD

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: Riggins to Pittsburg Landing is about 1 hour 20 minutes. Jet boat from Pittsburg Landing to Kirkwood Ranch is about 15 minutes

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 2/5 Moderate – Short hikes carrying materials from the unloading zone to the bridge site.

Project Work: 4/5 Strenuous- Loading and unloading lumber, hardware, and bridge materials. Carrying materials short distances. Heat/temperature will be the biggest safety hazard.
