Project Name: Bernard Creek – BSU

Dates: March 16 -22

On the border between Oregon and Idaho, the Snake River winds through Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in North America. We’ll take a jet boat with all our gear from Hells Canyon Dam downstream to where we’ll camp for the week at Bernard Creek. This is a primitive backcountry campsite on the Snake River. ITA will bring group camping gear, including kitchen gear and a large group tent. Boise State students and staff, with ITA crew leaders, will spend the week working on the Bernard Creek Trail which heads straight up the Bernard Creek Canyon to Dry Diggins Ridge. We can also head along the river from camp and work along the Snake River Trail. Hells Canyon has an incredible history, diverse wildlife, and remarkable scenery.

This is the third year of the BSU/ITA spring break trip! ITA has been working on all the creek trails on the Idaho side of Hells Canyon for years, from the bottom along the river and starting from high in the Seven Devils working down. The Snake River trail is popular with both boaters and backpackers.

Project information is subject to change. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.

Difficulty Rating

If having the right gear to be safe and comfortable is a limiting factor, volunteers may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Typically less than four miles hiking each day but with a steeper incline as we work further up the trail. During the week, we can switch to work on the Snake River Trail, which is much less steep, depending on what the crew decides. See the linked maps for the elevation profile.

Project Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Mostly brushing, with some digging and swinging tools. Potential for some tread work and rock fall removal. Bending or kneeling for light saw work or brushing. Carrying tools and day packs short distances. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace. The weather in March can be unpredictable so please pack accordingly!
