Backpacking and Trailwork on Tenmile Creek: Opening Trails in the Gospel Hump

Project Name: Ten Mile

Date: September 10-14

Ten Mile Creek is a remote trailhead off the old Sourdough Lookout Road and leads into the Gospel Hump Wilderness. The trail makes a gradual climb along the creek through dense thickets and open meadows. This is the second year of ITA work here, and the last crew cleared the first three miles, with one group removing an impressive 138 trees. This year, we are going to continue working into the Wilderness, clearing and backpacking as needed to keep pushing toward the meadows.

These trails used to be more popular but have slowly fallen out of use because of all the downed trees. Once clear, these are great trails for gentle day hikes or multiday backpacking trips for anyone looking to explore the Gospel Hump Wilderness! ITA last worked here in 2023, and the weather was perfect for trail work. The crew enjoyed trying to identify all the cool mushrooms found along the trail. Last year the Forest Service also spent significant effort to open the trail where a large slide made it impassable to stock.

Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

You should have experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project so injuries such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being properly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip, please reach out to trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.

If having the right gear to be safe and comfortable is a limiting factor, volunteers may apply for scholarships to purchase gear they need through the Splattski Outdoor Access Fund.

Hike: 4/5 Strenuous – Gradual climb over seven miles into camp. Past the first three miles, there could be a lot of downed logs to cut through or climb over to get into camp. Backpacking, carrying all personal gear and trail tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous After the three miles of reclearing from past projects, this trail hasn’t been cleared in several years; lots of crosscut work is expected.
