Project Name: High Dive – Deep Creek

Project Dates: July 12-18

To the west, Six Lakes Basin, Deep Creek, and the southern Seven Devils Mountains, and trails that lead into Hells Canyon and the Snake River. To the east, Echols Mountain and trails heading to Twin Lakes in the head of the Rapid River drainage. This trip puts volunteers on the ridge in the middle, exploring both sides! With incredible views, volunteers will car camp along Black Lake Road (before the road deteriorates in quality closer to the lake) and work on the three trails that start right by camp. Log out, brushing, tread work, drainage; each trail will bring a unique trail work experience each day.

Deep Creek Trail descends down, following the creek into Hells Canyon, where ITA will be working on the bottom section earlier in the spring. From the road, it drops into the basin where several springs feed into Deep Creek. Horse Pasture Basin Trail is a main trail for stock and backpackers to access the southern Seven Devils, into Six Lakes Basin, Black Lake, and Casey Mountain. This trail has less tree cover, and more big views! Echols Ridge stays in the trees as it drops from the road and winds around Echols Peak. A second crew will be out in the fall to continue working on this trail, backpacking into Twin Lakes hidden on the other side of Echols Mountain.

Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@#idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous   Each trail has some elevation gain and lossbetween 1000 and 1600 feet depending on trail conditions and how far we can work on each one. No more than three miles of hiking one way per day is expected. See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Saw work and brushing, with some digging and swinging tools. Potential for some tread work and rock fall removal. Carrying tools and day packs short distances.
