Project Name: Rapid River – Frank Church

Project Dates: July 26 – August 1

There is a lesser-known, but equally impressive, Rapid River that runs through the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Starting near Seafoam Guard Station, it cuts through a rugged canyon and ends at the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Volunteers will car camp for a week in this beautiful remote section of the Salmon Challis National Forest and work on the Rapid River Trail.

We'll car camp together in an aspen grove, near the Seafoam Guard Station, and carpool the last new miles up to the trailhead. The trail starts at the end of the road, and volunteers will begin each day with a river crossing. After this, the trail stays up along the canyon wall and follows along the dramatic river canyon overlooking Rapid River. The trail alternates through forested areas, talus slopes, and through several side creeks. We'll work on log out, with some potential tread work and brushing.

Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 1 hour 30 minutes from Stanley

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous Rapid River Trail has some ups and downs but generally maintains elevation along the side of the canyon. Hiking with day packs and tools. See the linked map for the elevation profile.
