Project Name: Upper Yellow Jacket

Project Dates: August 30 – September 5

In this rugged and remote corner of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, volunteers will be car camping at Yellowjacket Lake Campground for a week, working on Upper Yellowjacket Creek. A long drive into this project is rewarded with big views of Sugarloaf Rock and Yellowjacket Lake right in camp. Just south of the iconic Bighorn Crags and Yellowjacket Mountains, we'll be working on log out and tread work between Frog Meadows and Yellow Jacket Guard Station. Lots of crosscut work is expected! Come early or stay after to explore, nearby are Hoodoo Meadows, the Big Horn Crags, and McEleny Peak.

Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.

Trails: Upper Yellow Jacket Creek #6038

Itinerary: This is a Sunday-Saturday weeklong project. Sunday, meeting in the afternoon to set up camp. Project work Monday-Friday, with a day off as needed to relax or explore. Saturday, wrap up any work, pack up camp, and head home!

Food Provided by ITA: Yes

Gear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Camping, Food Provided

Crew Leader: Barry Miller, Chris Keilty, and Matt McDonagh

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 3 hours form Challis

Trail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Starting from the road, the trail drops down into the creek bed, losing 1400 feet of elevation over 5 miles. Longer hikes into work each day, and uphill back to camp. Tools and day packs are carried into work each day. See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Rating: 4/5 Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2024 Red Rock Fire, about three miles from the trailhead. Lots of down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed.
