Our Trail Spotlight highlights day trips to multi-day hikes across Idaho. Trail conditions can change quickly- swollen rivers can become impassable, windstorms can knock trees down across trails, and snow can come earlier than expected. Please take these recommendations as a jumping off place and do additional research to understand current conditions and keep yourself safe if you choose to hike this trail. Physical guidebooks and maps are always good to have or check out some online resources like Alltrails.com for updated trail reports. If your trip is as awesome as you hope it will be, please share photos and feedback!

Trail Spotlight: Ezra Meeker Loop
Recommended by: Kelly Hewes, ITA’s Communications Director
Duration: Day Hike
Area: Boise Foothills
Difficulty Rating: 1 out of 5- very little elevation gain, features gentle grades with wide, well-maintained paths.
Road Considerations: Access this trail from the Oregon Trail Recreation Area Trailhead along Highway 21 in Southeast Boise. There are two other trailheads across Highway 21 that access another set of trails that feature Oregon Trail history.
Total hiking miles: 1.4 miles for just the loop but easily extended for a longer hike.
The Hike: Part of the Oregon Trail Recreation Area in southeast Boise, the Ezra Meeker Loop offers a unique mix of foothills scenery and Idaho history. This easy, family-friendly trail winds through rolling hills with expansive views of the Boise Front and Boise River canyon, making it a favorite for hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and anyone looking for a shorter outing in the Boise Foothills. The flat trails in this system are great for biking and hiking with kids!
Named after Oregon Trail pioneer Ezra Meeker, the loop honors one of the most influential advocates for preserving the history of the Oregon Trail. Along the route, visitors can see preserved wagon ruts left behind by emigrants traveling west in the 1800s. Interpretive signs throughout the reserve help tell the story of the trail and the people who journeyed along it.
At roughly 1.4 miles with minimal elevation gain, the Ezra Meeker Loop is approachable for nearly all ability levels while still delivering beautiful scenery and a true foothills experience. It’s easy to add on more distance to this trail with the many loops and offshoots that are part of the reserve.
Spring brings colorful wildflowers to the hillsides and evening walks reward visitors with sunsets over the valley. Whether you’re interested in local history, introducing someone to the trails, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk close to town, the Oregon Trail Recreation Area offers a uniquely scenic and meaningful place to explore.

Things to consider: There is no shade on this trail so plan accordingly. As for all trails in the Boise Foothills, keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. Most of this area burned in 2024 and plants are slowly recovering.
Fun places to visit on your way in or out: A short drive away, Lucky Peak State Park offers some great picnic spots along the Boise River and a decent swimming area for those hot summer days.
Resources: Check out Ridge to River’s interactive map to see all the trails in the reserve and surrounding area.
