Project Name: Alturas – Mattingly – Veterans

Dates: July 12-18

TA’s Veterans Program provides a supportive environment where active duty and retired service members can engage in mission-focused public land stewardship. This program offers veterans the opportunity to learn valuable trail maintenance skills while finding camaraderie with fellow veterans who share a love for the outdoors.

Pack stock will meet volunteers early at the trailhead at Powerplant Campground where they’ll pack in food and gear. We’ll set up a backcountry camp approximately five miles, in the shade along the river. Working on the Altrusa Lake – Mattingly Trail, the crew will focus on removing logs and clearing brush as time allows. This trail follows Mattingly creek to its headwaters, and climbs up and over the wilderness divide, to end at Arturas Lake.

ITA led a successful trip here in 2021 with lots of great crosscut work and stunning views of the southern Sawtooth Range. This section of trail is also part of the Idaho Centennial Trail and ITA is committed to maintaining sections of this 1000-mile trail each year.

Trail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile

Refundable deposit: $50

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous5 miles into camp, fairly gentle grade with one big climb but only about 1000 feet total election change. Carrying day packs, potentially some gear or tools depending on pack stock capacity. See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Work: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Lots of saw work, brushing, and some tread work. Volunteers can pick trail duties based on comfort and ability level and are encouraged to work at their own pace.
