Loading Events

Project Name: Langer Lakes

Project Dates: July 10-12

Volunteers will meet for a long weekend project on the Salmon Challis National Forest to work on the Langer Lake Trail. This trail is a major access route for the numerous lake basins in this unique corner of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness

We'll car camp together along Beaver Creek Road and carpool a short drive up to the trailhead. Each day we'll work our way further up the trail into the lake basin, working up to Ruffneck Peak. The rugged landscape here is home to Langer Lake, Island Lake, Ruffneck Lake, and others, all of which sit under Ruffneck Peak and Langer Peak. This trail continues into the Solider Lakes Basin. Our work may bring us to the top of Ruffneck Peak (elevation 9367') to see the fire tower at the top. It's a 4-mile climb from the trailhead, but those who make it to the peak will be rewarded with some of the most iconic views in the Franch Church of the of the surrounding mountains and valleys!

Estimated Drive Time from Closest Town: 45 Minutes form Stanley

Trail Map: Click for trail map and elevation profile

Refundable deposit: $25

Why do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute, which can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in paying for this fee, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.

Difficulty Rating

Hike: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – 4 miles and 2500 feet of elevation gain to the top. Steady incline into the basin but gets steeper as it heads up to the peak. Tools and day packs are carried into work each day. See the linked map for the elevation profile.

Project Rating: 3/5 Moderately Strenuous – This project will be focused on logout and brushing. This area burned in 2012, so down trees are expected for repeated saw work; some treadwork may also be needed.

Volunteer Spots: 12
